India's captain Rohit Sharma made history by becoming the fastest opening batter to hit 9000 ODI runs during the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 Group A match against Pakistan at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday. He reached this milestone with his very first run of the game.
With this achievement, Rohit became only the sixth ODI opener to cross the 9000-run threshold. He now joins the ranks of legends like Sachin Tendulkar (15310), Sanath Jayasuriya (12740), Chris Gayle (10179), Adam Gilchrist (9200), and Sourav Ganguly (9146).
What sets Rohit apart is that he did it in just 181 innings, making him the fastest opener to reach this landmark. Previously, Sachin Tendulkar held the record, reaching 9000 runs in his 197th innings as an opener.
In the match against Pakistan, Rohit scored 20 runs before being dismissed by Shaheen Shah Afridi. He managed to hit 3 fours and a six off 15 balls before getting out.
Afridi bowled a perfect inswinging yorker, leaving Rohit with no chance, and he had to head back to the dressing room.
Rohit Sharma has scored over 11,000 runs in One Day Internationals
Rohit Sharma recently crossed the 11,000 runs milestone in his last game against Bangladesh, doing it in just 261 innings. This makes him the second-fastest player to hit that mark, right after his teammate Virat Kohli, who did it in 222 innings.
Earlier this year, Rohit also set the record for the fastest ODI opener to reach 8,000 runs during the Asia Cup against Sri Lanka, achieving it in 160 innings and surpassing Hashim Amla, who took 176 innings to reach the same goal.
Overall, Rohit has over 15,000 runs as an opener across all formats, placing him seventh on the all-time list. His 44 centuries as an opener are only outdone by David Warner (49) and Sachin Tendulkar (45).
In the recent match between India and Pakistan, Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat first. Saud Shakeel scored 62 runs, helping Pakistan set a total of 241.
Kuldeep Yadav shone for India, taking three wickets as Rohit Sharma and the team managed to dismiss Pakistan in the last over of their innings.
