'Rohit Sharma Is Finished': Calls for Retirement Grow as Fans Lose Patience

Rohit Sharma's comeback as an opener at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) didn't go as hoped, as he once again ended up with a single-digit score. The 37-year-old faced only five balls in the first innings of the fourth Test against Australia, managing to score just 3 runs before heading back to the pavilion.

The Indian captain is facing a lot of heat for his disappointing performances in Test cricket. Fans online are definitely not happy with how Rohit's been playing, and his latest dismissal has led to a flood of reactions on social media.

In his last 14 innings, Rohit has only racked up 152 runs. After missing the first match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth, his scores have been 3, 6, 10, and 3. While Rohit was out, Jasprit Bumrah took charge and led India to a solid 295-run victory in the first Test.

Rohit Sharma's performance and leadership are under scrutiny. During the Melbourne Test, the team opted for three all-rounders: Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, and Nitish Kumar Reddy.

One user expressed their thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), saying, "Being out of form is one thing, but Rohit Sharma is radiating negative vibes now. That negativity is not only affecting his batting but also the whole team. I never imagined a player of his caliber would struggle like this, even towards the end of his career. But that's the reality of Test cricket. Time to consider retirement."

Here are some of the other reactions:

Rohit Sharma's performance is being closely examined

Rohit had a rough time in the pink-ball practice match against Australia Prime Minister's XI, managing to score only three runs. In his previous series against Bangladesh and New Zealand, he only managed one score over 50.

After Rohit got out, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting criticized him for a lazy shot. "That’s just a lazy, not-switched-on, not-up-for-the-moment type of shot,” Ponting remarked on 7 Cricket.

Earlier, Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary former India captain, suggested that Rohit might consider retirement if he continues to struggle in Melbourne and Sydney. Gavaskar shared this thought during the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test at Gabba, Brisbane.

“I think Rohit will definitely get a chance to play in the next couple of matches. But if he doesn’t score runs, I believe he’ll make the decision himself,” he said while commentating for ABC Sport.

“He’s a very thoughtful cricketer and wouldn’t want to be a liability for the team. He genuinely cares about Indian cricket, so if he doesn’t perform in the upcoming games, I think he’ll choose to step down,” he added.
