Rohit Sharma Faces 19-Year Low After Unsuccessful Ranji Trophy Comeback; Fans Leave Stadium Early

India's captain Rohit Sharma did not have a successful return to the Ranji Trophy. He was dismissed for a mere three runs after facing 19 deliveries in Mumbai's Group A match against Jammu and Kashmir at the Sharad Pawar Academy in BKC, Mumbai. Rohit's performance in the first innings marked a disappointing 19-year low, prompting disgruntled fans to exit the venue shortly after his dismissal.

Rohit managed to score a single early on but faced significant challenges against Umar Nazir Mir. The 37-year-old batsman was unable to register any runs against the tall right-arm bowler, who consistently targeted the off-stump with varying lengths. Ultimately, on his 17th delivery, Mir secured the crucial wicket as Rohit attempted a pick-up shot, resulting in a leading edge that was comfortably caught by Paras Dogra.

In the aftermath of the dismissal, frustrated fans, for whom the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) had arranged additional seating at the ground, chose to leave the venue.

Rohit Sharma hits 19-year low

Rohit currently holds a batting average of merely 10.43 after 16 innings in the 2024/25 first-class season. This figure represents the lowest average for an Indian batsman since 2006, considering a minimum of 15 innings while batting in the top six, and it ranks as the second-lowest overall. Notably, England's Haseeb Hameed recorded an average of 9.44 over 18 innings during the 2018 season.

Throughout this period, he accumulated a total of 167 runs across nine matches, with 164 of those runs coming from Test cricket, including only one half-century. This total also reflects his disappointing tour of Australia, where he managed to score just 31 runs in five innings, resulting in an average of 6.2, the lowest ever recorded by a visiting captain in Australia. Subsequently, he opted to withdraw from the playing XI for the final Test match in Sydney.

The day proved to be equally disappointing for Mumbai, as the former champions were dismissed for a mere 120 runs in their first innings, with Shardul Thakur being the standout performer, scoring a fifty. Jammu and Kashmir, currently positioned second and ahead of Mumbai in the points table, established a 26-run lead by the end of the day's final session, having lost five wickets.
