Shortly after the impressive mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy was observed training with the Indian ODI squad in Nagpur for the upcoming series against England, he was officially added to the team after initially being overlooked. This development led to speculation regarding India's consideration of the 33-year-old as a potential candidate for the Champions Trophy. On Wednesday, India captain Rohit Sharma addressed this matter during a pre-match press conference.

While speaking to the media at the VCA Stadium prior to the first match of the three-game series, Rohit indicated that Chakaravarthy's selection certainly places him in the running for a spot in the Champions Trophy, although his inclusion will ultimately hinge on his performance.

"Indeed, he has demonstrated something unique. I recognize that this is a T20 format, but he possesses distinct qualities. Therefore, we wanted to explore our options and assess how we can utilize him," the 37-year-old remarked.

"This series provides us with an opportunity to field him at some point and evaluate his capabilities. At this moment, we are not focused on whether we will include him or not, but he will certainly be in contention. If everything unfolds favorably for us and he meets the expectations, then he will definitely be a consideration," the Indian captain further elaborated.

A look at Varun Chakaravarthy's white-ball credentials

The spinner from Tamil Nadu distinguished himself as the leading bowler in the recently concluded T20I series against England, where he claimed 14 wickets across five innings. Prior to this achievement, Chakaravarthy was recognized as the second-highest wicket-taker in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which concluded last month, securing 18 wickets in six innings at an impressive average of 12.16. In total, he has participated in 23 List A matches for Tamil Nadu, taking 59 wickets at an average of 21.15, including three five-wicket hauls, one of which occurred during the team's quarter-final match against Rajasthan in the Vijay Hazare Trophy held in Vadodara.

Nevertheless, with India selecting four spinners for the Champions Trophy, it remains to be seen who might be replaced by Chakaravarthy should he succeed in impressing the selectors and management.
