Rohit Sharma Confirms ODI Commitment After Champions Trophy Triumph

5 days ago | 5 Views

Rohit Sharma has officially stated that he will not be retiring and intends to continue participating in ODIs for India following the team's remarkable victory in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Throughout the press conference, he avoided addressing the subject, but just as he was about to conclude, the Indian captain decisively put an end to any retirement speculation.

"I want to clarify that I am not retiring from this format. This is to ensure that no rumours circulate in the future. Thank you very much," Rohit remarked.

This announcement is not particularly surprising. Despite circulating rumours suggesting that March 9, 2025, would mark Rohit's final appearance as an active player for India, the 38-year-old still has time before considering retirement. Speculation regarding his future first arose during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy when Rohit opted to exclude himself from the Playing XI before the Sydney Test. Reports indicated that his retirement was imminent, potentially as early as the conclusion of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. Nevertheless, three months later, Rohit has demonstrated his desire to continue.

During the press conference, when asked about his future, Rohit provided a somewhat reserved response regarding the topic of retirement. However, after approximately ten minutes, he addressed the matter directly.

"Let’s see what happens next. Winning two ICC trophies is a significant accomplishment. Remaining undefeated is the cherry on top. I have witnessed very few teams achieve two tournaments without a loss. We needed to arrive here and prepare thoroughly. We made good use of the conditions. There are no plans for the future; what is currently happening will continue."

What next for Rohit Sharma

Rohit has expressed his intention to continue participating in One Day Internationals; however, it remains uncertain whether he will be fit to compete in the 2027 World Cup in South Africa. As captain, he has accomplished what only MS Dhoni achieved previously—securing multiple ICC titles. He has surpassed Dhoni by leading India to victory in the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy within a mere nine months. Had it not been for Australia disrupting India's aspirations on November 19, Rohit would have claimed all three major ICC titles in less than two years.

A significant aspect that warrants attention is India's transition in leadership. While Rohit is free to continue playing and contributing crucial runs—as evidenced by his pivotal innings of 76 in the final, which set a strong foundation for India's chase of 252—he may eventually choose to resign as captain and pass the leadership to his current deputy, Shubman Gill. Should Rohit participate in the 2027 World Cup, by that time he will be approaching 40 years of age, making it improbable for him to lead India as captain in South Africa.
