BCCI officials, including chief selector Ajit Agarkar, captain Rohit Sharma, and head coach Gautam Gambhir, convened in Mumbai on Saturday for a review meeting following India's disappointing performance, having lost six out of their last eight Tests, resulting in consecutive series defeats, including a home whitewash. The meeting addressed various issues, notably the future leadership of the Indian Test and ODI teams. Rohit Sharma has reportedly consented to continue as captain until the selectors appoint his successor.

As reported by Dainik Jagran, Rohit expressed during the review that he would serve as skipper for the upcoming months until the board identifies a new captain, assuring that he would provide his "full support" to the chosen individual.

Additionally, it was confirmed that Rohit will retain his position as captain for the ODI format, with a decision regarding his successor to be made after the ICC Champions Trophy.

In July of the previous year, Suryakumar Yadav was appointed as the new captain of the Indian T20I team following Rohit's retirement from the format after the T20 World Cup.

Bumrah, India's next Test captain?

During the meeting, the name of Jasprit Bumrah was brought up as a possible candidate for the leadership role. The fast bowler had previously guided India to their sole victory in the format since October, achieving a significant win in Perth against Australia while Rohit was absent due to the birth of his second child. Additionally, he captained India in Sydney after Rohit chose to withdraw from the series decider; however, the 31-year-old experienced back spasms on the second day of the match, which ultimately resulted in a loss for India.

Nevertheless, there were concerns expressed during the meeting regarding Bumrah's ability to lead India in a five-match series, particularly in light of workload management considerations. The report indicated that BCCI officials decided to postpone discussions about Bumrah's potential as a future captain.
