Rohit Sharma Advised to Balance Aggression as Fans Demand More Runs

Rohit Sharma has experienced a challenging beginning to the 2025 Indian Premier League season. In his three matches with the Mumbai Indians thus far, he has recorded scores of 0, 8, and 13. In his most recent match against the Kolkata Knight Riders, the seasoned batsman was utilized as an Impact Player. Rohit's batting performance has been scrutinized over the past few months, despite his commendable contributions during the Champions Trophy last month, where he scored 76 runs in the crucial final against New Zealand, setting a strong foundation for the team's title victory.

Former Indian cricketers Manoj Tiwary and Virender Sehwag contend that Rohit does not need to adopt an overly aggressive style consistently. While Rohit has embraced an attacking mindset in limited-overs formats in recent years, which has proven successful in ODIs and T20Is, he has struggled to make a significant impact for the Mumbai Indians in recent seasons. Both Tiwary and Sehwag suggest that Rohit should take his time at the crease and play in a manner that is true to his natural abilities.

"There should be a season where he claims the Orange Cap. He is too talented a player to not score consistently. Recently, he has modified his batting approach when representing India, which is acceptable. However, I believe he is capable of playing at a more measured pace. If he remains at the crease, he is a player who has achieved three double-centuries in ODI's. He will play his shots if he takes his time. At times, he plays too quickly. He is too skilled to squander his innings," Tiwary remarked to Cricbuzz.

Sehwag echoed the sentiment, suggesting that Rohit should "enjoy" his cricket while acknowledging that he can deliver impactful performances if he spends more time at the crease.

"He should relish his cricket. He shouldn't focus on the number of runs he needs to score. He should approach the game with the mindset that it is his day.

"He needs to make significant contributions. If he plays for 15 of the 20 overs, he can easily accumulate 80-100 runs. He should aim to score runs that have a substantial impact," stated the former Indian batsman.

MI face LSG next

Rohit is set to strive for a significant return with the bat as the Mumbai Indians prepare to face the Lucknow Super Giants in their upcoming home match on Friday. The MI player has had subdued performances in recent IPL seasons; however, in 2024, he amassed 417 runs, marking his best tally since 2016, which featured an unbeaten century. Additionally, Rohit achieved an impressive strike rate of 150, the highest he has recorded in any IPL season.
