Rohit Sharma Advised Against Desperation During Difficult Times: 'Excessive Practice Can Be Detrimental'

Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar provided his insights regarding Rohit Sharma's recent difficulties and offered guidance for regaining his form. Rohit faced significant challenges during the red-ball season, struggling notably against New Zealand and Australia in consecutive series. In an attempt to find his footing, he returned to first-class cricket; however, this effort proved unfruitful as he recorded disappointing scores of 3 and 28 in both innings.

Rohit's difficulties persisted as he managed only two runs in the first ODI, failing to overcome the poor performance from the Test series against Australia. His dismissal, resulting from a poorly timed lofted shot off Saqib Mahmood that was caught at midwicket, underscored his urgent need for runs. Across all formats, he has accumulated a mere 166 runs in his last 16 innings.

Bangar, who has previously collaborated with Rohit during his tenure as Team India's batting coach, recommended that the Indian captain should refrain from excessive practice during this challenging period. He suggested that Rohit take some time for introspection and review footage from his successful phases to identify what contributed to his past achievements.

"There comes a time in a player's career when runs are hard to come by. Over-practicing can sometimes be counterproductive. It may be beneficial for him to spend some time alone, reflecting on the successful periods of his career. Watching videos could help him recognize his effective habits and routines," Bangar stated in an interview with Star Sports.

'Rohit Sharma shouldn't be too desperate in his thinking'

The Indian captain faces significant pressure to restore his performance in the upcoming two ODIs, which is crucial for preparing his mindset for the Champions Trophy, where India will compete in all their matches in Dubai. The highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan is scheduled for February 23.

The former batting coach emphasized that this is not the moment for Rohit to succumb to desperation in his thought process; rather, he should recall the strategies that have previously brought him success.

"At times, revisiting those effective strategies can be immensely helpful in regaining one's rhythm. It is essential for him to remember what has worked well for him. He should avoid becoming overly desperate in his thinking," he remarked.
