India's captain Rohit Sharma recently opened up about his immediate plans, stating that his main priority is the upcoming three ODIs against England and the Champions Trophy. Ahead of the first ODI in Nagpur, he was asked if the BCCI had requested him to make a decision regarding his future after the Champions Trophy, as reported by The Times of India. Rohit chose not to comment on that, mentioning that such rumors have been circulating for years, and he wouldn't provide any clarification.
"Why should I discuss my future plans right now?" Rohit replied, sounding a bit annoyed by the question. "We have three ODIs and the Champions Trophy ahead of us. These rumors have been around for a long time. My focus is on these matches; we'll see what happens later," he said.
The report cited an unnamed BCCI source, who mentioned that during the last selection meeting, officials were looking for clarity on Rohit's future since the team management has plans moving forward and wants everyone aligned.
The selectors and board members had a chat with Rohit around the last selection meeting. He’s been advised to think about his future plans after the Champions Trophy. The team management has some strategies lined up for the upcoming World Test Championship cycle and the ODI World Cup, and they want to make sure everyone is aligned for a smooth transition, according to a BCCI source.
Rohit, who was India's second-highest scorer in the last ODI World Cup, has struggled with his form in 2024. The Hitman hasn’t managed to score significantly in his last eight Test matches, hitting double digits only five times in his last 15 innings, with just one of those being a half-century.
After a tough series at home against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia, discussions about Rohit Sharma's future started heating up. He even chose to sit out the final Test in Australia, sparking rumors about a potential retirement from Test cricket. However, during an interview with Star Sports on Day 2 of that Test, Rohit made it clear that he’s not planning to retire anytime soon.
