India's senior players encountered markedly different outcomes in the second ODI against England held in Cuttack. Captain Rohit Sharma made a remarkable comeback, scoring a commanding 119 runs off 90 balls, while Virat Kohli managed only five runs before being dismissed by an exceptional delivery from Adil Rashid. Muttiah Muralitharan, the legendary Sri Lankan spinner, expressed confidence in Kohli's ability to regain his form, emphasizing the necessity for both players to perform well for India to secure victory in the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Muralitharan stated, "Certainly, as they are world-class athletes. It is often said that class is permanent while form is temporary. They will find their batting rhythm again." He further remarked, "With Rohit scoring a century, I am confident that Virat will also return to form. Their performance will be crucial for India's success in this tournament."

Rohit and Kohli's forgettable form going into the series against England

Rohit delivered an exceptional performance during his innings on Sunday, significantly contributing to India's successful chase of a 305-run target. The team secured victory by four wickets, thereby clinching the series. This innings stood in stark contrast to Rohit's recent struggles over the past six months, during which he found it challenging to accumulate substantial runs across all formats. He concluded the 2024/25 Test season with an astonishingly low average of 10.93 over 15 innings.

Kohli's experience mirrored that of Rohit, as he performed slightly better yet still fell short of his usual high standards. He recorded an average of 22.47 in 19 Test innings during the 2024/25 season, despite achieving a century in the first Test against Australia in Perth. Both players had limited participation in other formats of cricket throughout the 2024/25 season and made their return to the Ranji Trophy, representing Mumbai and Delhi, respectively, after several years. Unfortunately, neither player made a significant impact, with Rohit scoring three and 28 against Jammu and Kashmir, while Kohli was dismissed for six against Railways.
