Rohit Faces Pressure to Avoid Tendulkar's Brisbane Streak
10 days ago | 5 Views
Rohit Sharma's challenges as both a Test batsman and captain persist, particularly highlighted by his return to the Indian team coinciding with a defeat at the Adelaide Oval during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. His leadership has faced intense scrutiny, especially after the 3-0 home series defeat to New Zealand. This latest loss marks his fourth consecutive defeat as captain, placing him among a select group of Indian leaders who have experienced such a streak.
Rohit now stands alongside Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni, each having faced four successive Test losses, while Sachin Tendulkar and Mansour Ali Khan Pataudi have endured even more. Although India secured victory in the opening match of the BGT under Jasprit Bumrah's captaincy, Rohit's string of losses across five matches continues to exert pressure on his performance as a struggling batter.
Kohli encountered a similar fate in 2020-21, beginning the year with two defeats in New Zealand before presiding over the notable loss in Adelaide. He subsequently stepped down and missed the remainder of India's remarkable comeback, only to face another defeat in his next match against England in Chennai, before ultimately rebounding with a commendable captaincy display in 2021.
Rohit in danger of getting close to the unwanted record?
MS Dhoni experienced the misfortune of losing four consecutive Tests on two occasions during his career. The first instance occurred in 2011 during India's challenging tour of England, and the second took place in 2014, just prior to his decision to retire from Test cricket and pass the captaincy to the emerging Virat Kohli.
Datta Gaekwad, one of India's early captains, also faced a similar fate, losing four Tests in a row in 1959, a time when India was still establishing itself in the cricketing world. In a brief period as Test captain after Mohammed Azharuddin's resignation, Sachin Tendulkar suffered five consecutive losses between 1999 and 2000, beginning with three defeats during the tour of Australia, followed by a 2-0 series defeat at home against South Africa, after which he too stepped down in favor of Sourav Ganguly.
However, the record for the most consecutive Test losses belongs to 'Tiger' Pataudi, who endured six defeats in a row during the 1967-68 season, facing whitewashes on tours of England and Australia in a particularly challenging period for the team. Indian supporters will be hopeful that Rohit Sharma does not approach this record, as the team is in urgent need of a favorable outcome in the upcoming third Test at the Gabba.
