Riyan Parag Falls Prey to Umpire's Gauge Test, Required to Switch Bat After Replacing Injured Samson Against DC

Following Sunil Narine and Anrich Nortje, Riyan Parag of the Rajasthan Royals became the most recent player to be subjected to the umpire's gauge test for bats, a measure recently implemented by the BCCI during the ongoing IPL 2025. Parag stepped in for the injured Sanju Samson as Rajasthan pursued a target of 189 runs against the Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Samson sustained an injury while attempting a poorly executed swipe against Mohit Sharma on the second-to-last ball of the fifth over. Despite the discomfort, he attempted to continue playing, even receiving attention from the physio, which led to a brief pause in the game before he ultimately decided to retire.

Upon replacing the injured Samson, Parag was halted by the on-field umpire before he could take his position at the crease, as his bat was required to undergo the gauge test. Unfortunately, it did not pass. Parag was observed animatedly discussing the situation with the match official before being compelled to switch his equipment.

What is BCCI's new rule regarding bat size?

In a To achieve a balance between batting and bowling in T20 cricket, the BCCI has implemented a rule requiring each bat to undergo a gauge inspection prior to the batter taking their position. The fourth umpire will examine the bats of the opening players before they enter the field, while the two on-field umpires will check the bats of all subsequent batters.

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal stated that this initiative aims to ensure a level playing field. "No one should feel that another player has an unfair advantage," he remarked in an interview with The Indian Express.

"The BCCI and IPL have consistently pursued measures to uphold the integrity of the game. We have maximized the use of technology to ensure that all decisions can be reviewed, preventing any unfair influence on the matches. The purpose of this initiative is to preserve the spirit of the game."
