Riyan Parag Faces BCCI Sanctions Following Rajasthan Royals’ IPL Rule Violation
2 days ago | 5 Views
Stand-in captain Riyan Parag expressed relief on Sunday as the Rajasthan Royals achieved their first victory in IPL 2025 after three attempts. Following defeats to Sunrisers Hyderabad in their opening match and the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday, Rajasthan triumphed over Chennai Super Kings in a thrilling final home game in Guwahati. However, a violation of IPL regulations during the match resulted in Parag facing a significant fine.
On Monday, the BCCI imposed a fine on Parag due to the Rajasthan Royals' slow over-rate during the game against Chennai at Barsapara Stadium. As this was the team's first infraction of the season, he was fined INR 12 lakhs under Article 2.22 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which addresses minimum over-rate violations.
Parag became the second captain to receive a fine for slow over-rate, following Mumbai Indians' Hardik Pandya, who faced a similar penalty after their match against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on Saturday, where MI suffered a heavy 36-run loss.
Previously, Hardik had served a one-match suspension after MI violated the IPL Code of Conduct twice during the 2024 season, causing him to miss the season opener for Mumbai in IPL 2025 against Chennai Super Kings. However, the BCCI announced prior to the current tournament that captains would no longer face suspensions for slow over-rate infractions; instead, they would incur demerit points based on the severity of the violation.
Rajasthan beat CSK
Sri Lankan wrist spinner Wanindu Hasaranga highlighted Chennai's struggles against spin bowling, concluding with impressive figures of 4 for 35. In the final over, Sandeep Sharma successfully defended 20 runs, which included the crucial wicket of MS Dhoni, contributing to CSK's unsuccessful chase. Prior to this, Nitish Rana delivered a standout performance with the bat, scoring a valuable half-century that enabled the Royals to set a competitive total, which their bowlers effectively defended.
Rajasthan's next match will be against Punjab Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Cricket Stadium in Chandigarh.
