The 2024/25 Ranji Trophy is set to commence on January 23, marking the beginning of the final phase of the group stage. Delhi finds itself in a critical situation, requiring a victory in their upcoming match against Saurashtra. The team has recorded only one win out of five matches in the initial part of the season, with three matches concluding in draws. In a significant development for Delhi, Rishabh Pant is expected to lead the team in the match against Saurashtra, although there has been no update regarding Virat Kohli's availability.

According to a report from the Times of India on Thursday, the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) is anticipated to finalize their squad for the next Ranji Trophy match on Friday, January 17. This match will mark Pant's return to the tournament after a seven-year absence, with his last appearance in the Ranji Trophy occurring during the 2017-2018 season finale against Vidarbha.

"A selection meeting is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, and it is expected that Rishabh Pant will assume the role of captain for the away match against Saurashtra," stated a senior official from the DDCA to the national daily.

No update on Virat Kohli

The former captain of India has been included in the list of potential players for Delhi's upcoming two group matches in the Ranji Trophy. However, he has not yet confirmed his participation in the tournament.

There has been significant criticism regarding the absence of key Test batters from domestic cricket in recent years, particularly following the national team's consecutive series losses over the past three months, including an unprecedented 0-3 defeat at home to New Zealand. Kohli was one of the players who faced scrutiny. Although he scored a century in the opening match against Australia in Perth in November, he accumulated only 90 runs in the subsequent innings, primarily due to difficulties with deliveries outside the off-stump.

Delhi has one more group match left, aside from the game against Saurashtra. They are scheduled to compete in their final group match against Railways, commencing on January 30.
