Rishabh Pant, recognized as the highest-priced player in the history of the Indian Premier League auction, has been appointed as the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants for the IPL 2025 season. This announcement was made on Monday. Pant established a record during the mega auction held in November of the previous year, with LSG co-owner Sanjiv Goenka acquiring his services for an extraordinary ₹27 crore.

Given his prominence and the significant investment made, it was anticipated that Pant would assume the leadership position. Despite a disappointing IPL 2024 season with the Delhi Capitals, where they finished sixth, the Lucknow Super Giants, who ended just below in seventh place, are optimistic that the 27-year-old will guide them to a successful season.

"I believe Rishabh Pant is destined to be regarded as one of the greatest IPL captains in history. In 10 to 12 years, his name will be mentioned alongside legends like MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma," stated Goenka.

Rishabh Pant looks for a fresh start

Rishabh Pant assumes the role of captain from KL Rahul, infusing the Lucknow Super Giants with a revitalized sense of energy and direction. Eager to stage a robust comeback, Pant has significant challenges to address following a difficult period. He was sidelined for a considerable time, recuperating in 2023 from a life-threatening car accident, and faced difficulties during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, accumulating fewer than 200 runs in 10 innings, with only one half-century to his name. Nevertheless, Pant will have the opportunity to regain his form in the white-ball series against England and the Champions Trophy prior to the commencement of the IPL.

On the first day of the auction, LSG bolstered its roster by acquiring seven new players, including a number of promising domestic talents. Pant will captain a formidable team that includes notable signings such as Nicholas Pooran, David Miller, Aiden Markram, and Mitchell Marsh.

Since his IPL debut in 2016, Pant has amassed 3,284 runs across 111 matches. His most remarkable season occurred in 2018, during which he scored an impressive 684 runs, highlighted by a career-best unbeaten 128 against the Mumbai Indians. Furthermore, Pant has achieved over 400 runs in three separate seasons, underscoring his reliability as a leading performer.
