Ricky Ponting: Australia Poised for Victory in Brisbane Despite Indian Resilience

Ricky Ponting is widely regarded as an authoritative figure in the realm of cricket, and the former Australian captain has shared his insights on the anticipated outcome of the third match in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, set to take place at the Gabba in Brisbane.
During his appearance on the ICC Review show, the ex-Australian skipper expressed confidence in Pat Cummins' team, suggesting that they would leverage their familiarity with the conditions and the momentum gained from their recent 10-wicket triumph at the Adelaide Oval to secure a favourable result.
“It is quite challenging to predict what will unfold, especially considering the nature of the first two matches,” Ponting remarked on the Review. “Both games have been decisive victories for either side, leaving uncertainty about what to expect. However, I anticipate a more balanced contest this time around. Nevertheless, I still believe Australia will emerge victorious.”
India commenced the series with a commanding 295-run win in Perth, but Australia responded emphatically with a dominant performance using the pink ball, levelling the series at 1-1, thanks to an impressive display by their leading seam bowlers in Adelaide.
Can India cause another Gabba upset
Ponting elaborated on the crucial factors he believes will influence the match at the Gabba when play commences: “Typically, the team that wins the toss in Brisbane opts to bat first, aiming to perform well during the initial days before anticipating that the pitch will begin to provide more assistance to the bowlers as the game progresses. This is generally the strategy employed by teams in that venue.”
Despite this, Ponting expressed confidence in Australia's ability to perform well on a ground that was historically regarded as their stronghold until India achieved a remarkable victory there in 2021. Before that, Australia had not suffered a loss in Brisbane for over three decades, but they have since experienced another defeat, this time against the West Indies earlier this year in a match characterized by Shamar Joseph's dominance with the pink ball.
While India is likely to draw considerable confidence from these recent encounters, Ponting remains convinced that the home team possesses sufficient capability to secure a 2-1 series advantage in Brisbane. “I will support the recent form displayed there. India has a commendable record. However, historically, Australia has only lost twice at that venue in approximately 40 years. Therefore, I will back Australia to triumph at the Gabba.”
