Revised Incentive Plan: Coaches Now Eligible for Sports Ministry Rewards

New Delhi: The sports ministry has introduced a revised cash rewards scheme for athletes who win medals at international competitions, featuring a notable enhancement. Coaches are now included in the monetary rewards framework, with eligible medalists required to recommend their coaches. Coaches are categorized into grassroots, development, and elite levels, each with specific criteria established.
Olympic medalists will continue to receive ₹75 lakh for a gold medal, ₹50 lakh for silver, and ₹30 lakh for bronze. The cash prizes for medalists at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games remain unchanged at ₹30 lakh for gold, ₹20 lakh for silver, and ₹10 lakh for bronze.
In a significant shift from previous policies, athletes who win multiple medals at the Olympics, Paralympic Games, Asian Games, and Para-Asian Games, whether in individual or team events, will receive rewards for each medal earned. However, for other international competitions, athletes will only be eligible for a cash incentive corresponding to their highest-rated medal.
The coach or coaches associated with the medal-winning athletes will receive 50 percent of the cash incentive awarded to the respective athletes.
Grassroots coaches will receive 30 percent of the total cash incentive allocated to coaches, while development coaches, who played a role in nurturing the medalists, will also receive 30 percent. Elite coaches will be entitled to 40 percent of the prize money.
If multiple coaches are nominated in a single category, the cash incentive for that category will be divided equally among them.
Additionally, medalists have the option to nominate their training institutions instead of individual coaches for cash incentives. The nominated akhara(s) or academy(ies) will be eligible to receive a proportionate share of the incentive as determined by the respective category, as stated in the circular.
