Ravichandran Ashwin Reflects on Retirement: "No Need for a Grand Farewell"
2 months ago | 5 Views
India's recent defeat by 1-3 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) has prompted significant reflection within the realm of Indian cricket, both on the field and beyond. Among the various developments during the tour, Ravichandran Ashwin's unexpected mid-series retirement stood out as the most surprising event, leaving fans and analysts to ponder its ramifications.
The esteemed off-spinner, regarded as one of India's finest cricketers, announced his retirement from international cricket following the third Test. Ashwin's decision at the age of 38 took the cricketing community by surprise and sparked speculation regarding possible tensions within the team and disagreements with the management.
Nevertheless, Ashwin's own statements disclosed a profoundly personal rationale for his decision.
“I engage in a lot of contemplation about life choices. It is essential to understand that such decisions often arise instinctively. When one realizes that their purpose has been fulfilled, that thought leads to a decisive conclusion. Many opinions were expressed, but I do not consider it a significant matter,” Ashwin articulated on his Hindi YouTube channel, Ash ki Baat.
“Consider what transpired: I did not participate in the first Test, played in the second, and was absent from the third. There was a possibility of playing in the next match or not. This aspect reflects my creative side, which I sought to explore. At that moment, I sensed that my creativity had reached its conclusion, and thus, it was time to move on. It was as straightforward as that.”

The decision ignited discussions regarding the appropriateness of a farewell Test for Ashwin. In response, he expressed that he did not favour a ceremonial send-off.
"What significance does it hold if I walk out with the ball and receive applause? How long will this be a topic of conversation? In the past, before the advent of social media, people would discuss it briefly and then forget within a week. A farewell is unnecessary. The sport has provided us with much, and we have played with great joy.
"I wish to continue playing cricket. Where might that be? Clearly not within the Indian dressing room, but perhaps elsewhere... It is always preferable to conclude when people are left wondering 'why' rather than 'why not,'" he remarked.
Ashwin concludes his career as India's second-highest wicket-taker in Test matches, having claimed 537 wickets in 106 games, and a total of 765 wickets across all formats, a legacy that stands alongside the legendary Anil Kumble.
