Ravichandran Ashwin Calls for Change: Suryakumar Yadav Must Adapt After Disappointing Series
1 month ago | 5 Views
Suryakumar Yadav may have guided India to a 4-1 series win over England in the five-match T20I series, but his personal performance was pretty disappointing. He only scored 28 runs across five matches, with scores of 0, 12, 14, 0, and 2. Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes it’s time for Suryakumar to rethink his batting strategy.
Throughout the series, the Indian T20I captain kept getting out in a similar fashion, often falling victim to his own flick shot attempts.
Like Sanju Samson, Suryakumar struggled against the pace of bowlers like Jofra Archer, Mark Wood, and Brydon Carse. Ashwin thinks Suryakumar needs to hit the reset button on his batting, even though he did a great job leading the team.
“The issue is definitely Suryakumar's batting. His captaincy has been spot on during the series, no doubt about that. But he could really use some time to work on his batting. Both Sanju Samson and SKY are getting out to the same deliveries, same field placements, same shots, and making the same mistakes,” Ashwin mentioned on his YouTube channel ‘Ash Ki Baat’.
“I get that it can happen once or twice, but this is becoming a pattern. Players should feel free to express themselves, but our batters need to come up with better solutions to the same challenges,” he added.
He needs to switch up his approach
Suryakumar Yadav has hit four centuries in T20Is, but lately, he’s been struggling to score since the T20I series against South Africa last year.
Ashwin believes Suryakumar has a lot of experience but needs to reflect and find better solutions.
“Suryakumar Yadav is a seasoned player. He was part of a significant shift in the team dynamics. However, it’s time for him to rethink his batting strategy,” Ashwin mentioned.
In the fifth and final T20I at Wankhede Stadium, Abhishek Sharma lit up the game with 135 runs off just 54 balls, leading India to a huge 150-run victory. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill are currently out of the T20I squad, and it remains to be seen if they can make a return.
“This is a case of having too many good players, not a lack of options. Why feel embarrassed when we have such talent? We should use language that reflects our strong bench. Jaiswal definitely has a spot in this team, but Abhishek Sharma’s performance is definitely grabbing attention,” Ashwin said.
“He’s such an elegant batsman who makes the game look effortless. It’ll be hard to look away from him,” he added.
