Ravi Shastri on Rohit Sharma's Future: 'I Won't Be Shocked If He Retires'

There has been ongoing speculation regarding Rohit Sharma's future in Test cricket in recent days. The Indian captain is currently experiencing a significant decline in form, having recorded four single-digit scores in five innings during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Furthermore, Rohit's leadership decisions have also faced scrutiny, particularly as the team approaches a crucial match in Sydney, needing a victory to retain the trophy, with the current series standing at 1-2.
The rumors surrounding Rohit's potential retirement have intensified following head coach Gautam Gambhir’s press conference on Thursday, where he did not confirm whether the regular captain would be included in the playing XI for the fifth Test; Rohit has accumulated only 31 runs in five innings, resulting in a dismal average of 6.2.
Compounding the uncertainty, former India head coach Ravi Shastri, who has been outspoken about the team's dynamics, acknowledged that Rohit’s career could come to an abrupt conclusion if his performance does not improve. Notably, the Indian captain missed the opening Test in Perth, during which the team achieved victory in his absence.
“He will ultimately decide on his career, but I would not be surprised at all if Sharma chooses to retire, as he is not getting any younger,” Shastri remarked to ICC.
“There are younger players waiting in the wings, such as Shubman Gill, who boasts an impressive average of over 40 in 2024 and is currently not in the playing XI.
“It raises questions about why he is sitting on the bench and not contributing. Therefore, I would not be taken aback, but the decision rests with him.
“Ultimately, if India qualifies for the World Test Championship Final, that would change the context significantly.
“Otherwise, it may be the right moment for him to consider retirement, but if Sharma continues to play, he should aim to exit on a high note.”
Will tell Rohit to have a ‘blast’
Shastri, recognized for his forthright evaluations, asserts that Rohit must overcome the reservations that have hindered his performance during a challenging period. With Rohit's form facing intense examination, Shastri's counsel is clear: play without constraints.
“If I were in Rohit Sharma's presence, I would urge him, ‘Just go out there and give it your all. Enjoy yourself and make the most of it,’” Shastri remarked. The former head coach of India, who has consistently promoted a bold style of cricket, underscored that Rohit's current cautious demeanor is not producing favorable outcomes.
"Attempting to play in the manner you are currently is not yielding positive results. Go out there, take the initiative against the opposition, and let’s observe the outcome,” he further stated.
