Former India head coach Ravi Shastri and former England batsman Kevin Pietersen did not hold back in their criticism of the Jos Buttler-led team, which faced a 0-3 defeat in the ODI series against India ahead of the upcoming Champions Trophy set to commence next week. Following losses in Nagpur and Cuttack last week, England experienced another significant defeat, with India claiming a 142-run victory in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. This series followed a disappointing performance in a five-match T20I series against Suryakumar Yadav's team.
While commenting during the third match at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Shastri made a startling assertion that the England team had only batted in the nets once throughout their tour of India, criticizing their lackadaisical approach before the Champions Trophy.
"From what I have gathered, England has had merely one net session during this entire tour, if any at all. If you are not willing to put in the necessary effort, you will not see improvement," Shastri stated.
Pietersen, who was also part of the commentary team, echoed Shastri's sentiments, revealing that Tom Banton, who was brought in as a replacement for Jacob Bethell, had spent the day before the third match playing golf instead of practising batting.

"The two-hour flight from Dubai to here. He (Tom Banton) was on the golf course yesterday. He wasn't focusing on batting, and where have the problems arisen? Starting at 1 for 60, then 2 for 80. And what follows? None of them can handle spin. How do you get better at playing spin?" Pietersen remarked.
Shastri also took a jab at Jofra Archer during the broadcast. As the camera focused on the England dugout, Archer was spotted napping in a corner. Shastri commented, "Exactly the question I posed. A perfect time for a nap. This has been that kind of tour for England."
