Ravi Shastri Hints at Surprise Change in India XI for Champions Trophy Final vs NZ: ‘Groundsman Had 5 Days…’
8 days ago | 5 Views
As India prepares for the highly awaited Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand in Dubai, head coach Ravi Shastri has unexpectedly indicated that alterations to India's playing XI may be forthcoming. Although he refrained from specifying which players might be excluded, Shastri articulated that the pitch conditions are likely to be a significant factor in finalizing the lineup.
India maintained the same XI during the semi-final against Australia, a team that had previously triumphed over New Zealand in the tournament, with Varun Chakaravarthy delivering an outstanding performance by dismantling the Kiwi batting lineup in his initial match of the competition. The spinner's five-wicket haul secured his position for the knockout match scheduled for Tuesday.
“I would not be surprised if there is a change for either team based on the pitch,” Shastri remarked during The ICC Review. “The pitch we encountered against Australia was the finest we have observed throughout the tournament.”
Shastri further noted that with sufficient time for pitch preparation, teams may need to reassess their strategies.
“The groundsman has an additional five days since the last match to prepare the surface, and if it resembles a 280-300 pitch like the previous one, it may warrant some consideration. However, changes to the lineup will only be made if necessary,” Shastri added.
Axar Patel, Jadeja or Glenn Phillips?
Shastri also expressed his views on potential candidates for Player of the Match, emphasizing the significance of all-rounders. “For Player of the Match, I would favour an all-rounder,” he remarked.
“I would suggest Axar Patel or Ravindra Jadeja from India. From New Zealand, Glenn Phillips stands out; he can deliver moments of brilliance on the field. He could come in and produce a quickfire innings of 40 or 50 runs and potentially surprise everyone by taking a wicket or two.”
Additionally, Shastri highlighted Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, and Rachin Ravindra as players who could significantly influence the outcome of the final.
“Based on the rent form, Kohli is the one to watch. When these players get into their rhythm and you allow them to score their first 10 runs, they become a real threat. This applies to both Williamson and Kohli,” he stated.
“For New Zealand, I would point to Williamson. Rachin Ravindra is also an exceptional young talent. However, when these players sense an opportunity and you let them settle in during a final, reaching that 10-15 run mark, they become even more dangerous.”
As India approaches the final as slight favourites, Shastri recognized New Zealand's capability to cause an upset. “If there is one team that can defeat India, it is New Zealand,” he commented. “Thus, while India is favoured, it is only by a narrow margin.”
