Rashid Khan Sets New T20 Record: Surpasses Dwayne Bravo's Wicket Tally
1 month ago | 5 Views
Rashid Khan, long celebrated as one of the most influential bowlers in T20 cricket, has now reached the zenith of the format, becoming its all-time leading wicket-taker. The 26-year-old Afghanistan wrist spinner surpassed Dwayne Bravo’s record of 631 wickets by dismissing Dunith Wellalage during the SA20 Qualifier 1 against Paarl Royals on Tuesday.
"This is a significant achievement," Rashid remarked following his team's victory. "I never envisioned this; if you had asked me ten years ago whether I would reach this milestone, I would have been surprised. It fills me with pride to represent Afghanistan and to be at the forefront of this format. DJ [Bravo] is among the finest T20 bowlers, and it is a tremendous honor to be recognized in this way. I look forward to what lies ahead."
Rashid made his T20 debut as a teenager in October 2015 and has since established himself as a formidable presence in leagues around the globe. Approaching 500 matches, he has made a lasting impact in tournaments such as the IPL, PSL, CPL, BPL, and The Hundred.
Rashid is renowned for his ability to deliver the ball with both speed and an element of unpredictability. Batsmen often find it challenging to determine the direction of the ball's spin, leading them to adopt a cautious
approach rather than risk an aggressive play against him.
Rashid's all-round contributions
Rashid has evolved into a versatile all-rounder over the years. His capacity to clear the boundary with ease positions him as a formidable lower-order batsman, particularly highlighted by his distinctive “snake shot,” a technique that involves flicking a yorker with remarkable wrist strength.
His all-round prowess was prominently showcased during the IPL 2018 playoffs, where he scored 34 runs off just 10 balls for Sunrisers Hyderabad and subsequently excelled in bowling, achieving figures of 3 for 19 while also taking two catches. Acknowledging his transformative influence on the game, Gujarat Titans chose to retain him for INR 15 crore (approximately USD 1.8 million).
After the SA20, Rashid will represent Afghanistan in the Champions Trophy, donning his national colors. He is set to return to the Indian Premier League following the tournament, continuing his association with the Titans.
As Rashid remains in his prime, it is likely that the record books will need to accommodate numerous additional achievements from this Afghan cricketing star.
