Ranji Trophy Update: How Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, and Yashasvi Jaiswal Are Performing

The BCCI is now putting a spotlight on the Indian team's stars to keep their skills sharp for red ball cricket by getting back into domestic Ranji Trophy matches. The upcoming fixtures are a great chance for players involved in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to refine their skills, especially when it comes to batting.
Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, and Yashasvi Jaiswal have all made impressive strides in the domestic scene, but there's a lot expected from this young trio, who are set to be the backbone of India's batting lineup for years ahead. Let’s take a look at how they’ve performed in the Ranji Trophy before they make their comeback next week.
Rishabh Pant
Rishabh Pant really made a name for himself in the IPL with his creative T20 batting, but it was his outstanding performances for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy that got him noticed as a wicketkeeper-batter for India in Test cricket. During the 2016/17 Ranji Trophy season, he was one of the top scorers, racking up 972 runs with an impressive average of 81.
One of his standout moments was scoring a massive 308 against Maharashtra, which made him one of the youngest players to hit a triple-century in Ranji Trophy history. The following year, he was quickly brought into the Test squad and made his debut in England.
Since then, he’s been a regular in the team and hasn’t had a chance to go back to Ranji cricket, but now he’s set to represent Delhi again in the upcoming matches.
Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill really made a name for himself in 2018. He snagged the player of the tournament title at the U-19 World Cup, made waves in the IPL, and shone brightly in the Ranji Trophy during his first full season in the top-tier red-ball competition.
Playing for Punjab, Gill racked up 728 runs in just nine innings, boasting an impressive average of 104 while batting in the top order. A lot of this success came while he was still a teenager, proving that he could live up to the buzz surrounding his skills. His standout performance was a massive 268 against Tamil Nadu, where he opened the batting against a tough team and looked like he was on a whole different level.
Even though Shubman Gill has a Test average of 35, it doesn't quite reflect the impact he's had in red-ball cricket. A return to the domestic scene should definitely help him continue to grow.
Yashasvi Jaiswal
Jaiswal, the most recent player from this trio to hit the Ranji Trophy scene, kicked off his career with a strong Mumbai team at just 17. His incredible talent was clear right from the start.
He secured a spot in the shortened 2022 season and made a splash in just three games. Out of six innings, he scored centuries in three, with a top score of 181, which helped Mumbai make it to the tournament final. With an impressive average of 83, the Indian selectors saw him as a solid choice for a long-term opener, bringing him into the national team after a quieter season the next year.
Since then, Jaiswal has truly lived up to the hype, proving to be India’s standout batter since his Test debut in 2023.
