Ranji Trophy: Shardul Thakur's Remarkable Hat-Trick Powers Mumbai Against Meghalaya

Mumbai seamer Shardul Thakur delivered an exceptional performance on the first day of the Ranji Trophy match against Meghalaya, achieving a remarkable hat-trick that placed his team in a dominant position at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC, Mumbai, on Thursday.

The 33-year-old, recognized for his ability to perform under pressure, swiftly dismantled Meghalaya’s batting lineup at the start of the innings, significantly bolstering Mumbai’s quest for a vital victory in their effort to advance to the knockout stage.

Thakur commenced the bowling after Mumbai chose to field first, making an immediate impact by dismissing opener Nishanta Chakraborty for a duck on just his fourth delivery. However, the true devastation occurred in the third over when he accomplished his first-class hat-trick.

He took out B Anirudh, Sumit Kumar, and Jaskirat with consecutive deliveries, all failing to score, which left Meghalaya in a dire situation. His incisive bowling spell allowed Mumbai to seize early control of the match, as the defending champions aimed to secure maximum points from this encounter.

Thakur’s achievement marked him as only the fifth bowler from Mumbai to record a hat-trick in the history of the Ranji Trophy, with the last instance being Royston Dias during the 2023-24 season.

Ultimately, Meghalaya was bowled out for a mere 86 runs in their first innings.

Thakur’s outstanding performance further highlighted his impressive all-round capabilities this season, having accumulated 297 runs, including a century and two fifties, alongside 20 wickets. His recent achievements featured a rapid century in Mumbai’s last match, a surprising defeat to Jammu and Kashmir at the same venue the previous week, which left their qualification prospects precariously uncertain.

Mumbai's qualification scenario

Currently occupying the third position in Group A, Mumbai must achieve victory in this match by an innings or by 10 wickets to secure a crucial bonus point, which would equal their total with J&K at 29 points.

Baroda, holding the second position, has accumulated 27 points, intensifying the competition for qualification. Consequently, Mumbai will need to depend on J&K and Baroda not to earn more than a single point in their final-round match in Vadodara.

On the eve of the match, Thakur shared his insights regarding Mumbai’s strategy for this pivotal encounter.

“The longer format is akin to an emotional roller coaster; a single session can dramatically alter the course of the game. A player who has been observant must have gleaned valuable lessons from this. It is essential to remain humble and respectful; I do not underestimate anyone or anything. The message from both the coach and captain is clear: we must unite and perform cohesively as a team,” Thakur stated.
