Rajat Patidar Poised for Captaincy Talks: “Need to Figure Out How RCB Can Win at Home”

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) may be having a tough time winning at home in the current Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, but former Indian opener Robin Uthappa is really impressed with Rajat Patidar's leadership so far. RCB has lost three matches in this 18th IPL edition, all of which took place at their home ground, M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
In a rain-shortened match against Punjab Kings, RCB managed to score 95/9 in just 14 overs. The situation looked dire when they found themselves at 42/7, but Tim David's half-century saved them from a complete disaster.
Punjab Kings successfully chased down the target with five wickets remaining and 11 balls to spare. Following the defeat, Patidar took responsibility for the batting collapse, emphasizing the need for the team to come together and improve.
Uthappa praised Patidar's remarks, suggesting that if he can help RCB turn things around at home this season, he could become a strong candidate for captaincy discussions in Indian cricket.
"I really liked how Rajat owned up to RCB’s batting issues. It shows he has great leadership qualities. He needs to figure out how to secure wins at home, and if he does, he’ll definitely be in the running for captaincy talks in Indian cricket," Robin Uthappa shared on X (formerly Twitter).
What were Rajat Patidar's comments regarding the defeat against Punjab Kings?
After their loss to Punjab Kings, RCB set a new record for the most defeats at a single venue. The team, which made it to the IPL final in 2016, has now suffered 46 losses at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium during the tournament.
Following the game against Punjab Kings, Patidar pointed fingers at the batters for not putting up enough resistance on a challenging pitch.
"It was a bit sticky and had uneven bounce at first, but we could have performed much better as a batting group. Building partnerships is crucial, and we lost wickets too quickly, which is a significant lesson for us," Patidar remarked.
"The pitch wasn't that terrible; it had been covered for a while, which helped their bowlers. They deserve credit for that. Regardless of how the pitch behaves, we need to bat effectively and set a winning score. The batters have shown intent, which is encouraging. We can definitely fix some of our batting mistakes," he continued.
Currently, RCB sits in fourth place in the IPL standings with 8 points from seven matches, with all their wins this season coming away from home.
The team, led by Patidar, will face Punjab Kings again in an afternoon match on Sunday in New Chandigarh.
