Rahul Dravid Unimpressed by Riyan Parag's Failed Bat Test; Experts Question: 'Why the Recheck?'
13 days ago | 5 Views
Riyan Parag, a batter for the Rajasthan Royals, was compelled to switch his bat after it failed to meet the umpire's gauge test during the IPL 2025 match against the Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday, April 16. This incident took place when Parag came to the crease to replace RR captain Sanju Samson, who had to leave the field due to an injury. According to the new regulations established by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the IPL 2025 season, umpires are permitted to perform on-field inspections of bats to ensure compliance with the specified size and dimensions.
During the standard check of Parag's bat with the gauge, it was found to be non-compliant with the required standards. Consequently, he was instructed to choose another bat before resuming his innings.
Parag, visibly frustrated by the gauge test, attempted to communicate his perspective to the umpires. Meanwhile, the cameras shifted to focus on RR head coach Rahul Dravid, who maintained an expressionless demeanor. This was particularly striking, even by Dravid's usual standards of emotional restraint. The esteemed cricketer appeared far from pleased, yet he managed to maintain a composed facade.
Commentators react to Riyan Parag's bat check
There was a significant discussion, even within the commentary box. "Riyan Parag has just about passed the batometer. There were a few initial concerns, but it appears he has managed to comply with the requirements," remarked former England off-spinner Graeme Swann.
His co-commentator noted that Parag might be questioning the umpire's decision to recheck the bat, given that it had already been inspected prior to the match and no modifications had been made. "What he's likely saying to the umpire is, 'You already checked my bat in the dressing room. Why the need for another check?' Ultimately, it passed. He uses the same bat, and players can be quite particular about their match bats," he explained.
Parag was not the first player in this IPL to be asked to replace his bat after failing the gauge test. KKR players Sunil Narine and Anrich Nortje also had to switch their bats after they did not meet the standards set by the umpires' gauge.
To create a fair balance between batting and bowling in T20 cricket, the BCCI implemented a rule requiring all bats to be measured with a gauge before the batter takes their position. The fourth umpire will inspect the bats of the opening players before they enter the field, while the two on-field umpires will check the bats of all subsequent batters.
