Rajasthan Royals' head coach, Rahul Dravid, sustained an injury just one week prior to the commencement of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, raising concerns among supporters. However, the franchise has confirmed that the esteemed former player will return to the pre-season training camp on Wednesday.

In a social media update, Rajasthan provided information regarding Dravid's condition, noting that the former India head coach, who rejoined the franchise in September of the previous year, suffered a foot injury while participating in a cricket match in Bengaluru. Consequently, he was unable to accompany the team as they commenced their preparations for the 18th season of the IPL, set to begin on March 22.

A photograph shared on X, previously known as Twitter, depicted Dravid with a cast on his left leg. Nevertheless, the franchise announced that he would be joining the training camp in Jaipur on Wednesday. "Head Coach Rahul Dravid, who sustained an injury while playing cricket in Bangalore, is recovering well and will join us today in Jaipur," the Royals stated in their post.

Dravid returned to competitive cricket?

Thirteen years post-retirement, the 52-year-old made a notable return to competitive cricket last month, participating in a rare match for Vijaya Cricket Club in the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Group III league semifinal, alongside his 16-year-old son, Anvay. The father-son partnership yielded a 43-run contribution for the fourth wicket, with Dravid scoring 29 runs off 28 balls.

In the lead-up to this match, Dravid had also played in another game within the same tournament, where his son garnered attention with an impressive 58 runs off 60 balls.

Dravid rejoined the Royals last year prior to the mega auction. The former captain and coach of the Royals had a five-season tenure with the franchise from 2011 to 2015. In the 18th season of the IPL, Dravid will collaborate closely with the Royals' Director of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara, and captain Sanju Samson.

"Rahul sir was the one who identified me during the trials," Samson shared in a recent interview with Jiostar. "He approached me and asked, 'Can you play for my team?' From that moment to now, with me serving as the captain of the franchise and his return, I am immensely grateful, as is everyone in the franchise, to have Rahul sir back. I have played under him [at RR] as a player when he was the captain and also in the Indian team when he was the coach. However, the captain-coach dynamic is particularly special, and I eagerly anticipate learning a great deal from him."
