Rahul Dravid Defends Riyan Parag’s Captaincy Despite Twin Setbacks

Riyan Parag has faced a challenging beginning to his captaincy with the Rajasthan Royals, suffering defeats in his first two matches while substituting for Sanju Samson. However, RR coach Rahul Dravid expressed confidence in Parag, a player he has known since their U-19 days, highlighting his importance in the current IPL lineup.
"I believe he has adjusted remarkably well," Dravid remarked during the press conference prior to RR’s upcoming match against CSK. "Captaining is particularly difficult when [SRH] scores 280 runs on a flat pitch. The initial game can be quite challenging for a captain. Nonetheless, the composure he displayed and the fact that our team did not appear to be in disarray was commendable."
In their season opener, RR allowed 286 runs against SRH, resulting in a 44-run defeat, followed by an eight-wicket loss to KKR. They are now seeking their first victory of the season as they prepare to face CSK in Parag’s home state of Assam on Sunday.
"Even in the match against KKR, his courageous choice to bowl himself, recognizing the turning nature of the wicket with two left-handers at the crease, and to take the fifth over during the powerplay was both bold and correct," Dravid noted regarding Parag’s strategic decision-making.
"I find him quite impressive. As a captain, this opportunity is beneficial for him until Sanju is fit to return. He articulates his thoughts and ideas clearly and is very solid in that regard," Dravid added about Parag’s leadership. Samson, who is currently recovering from a finger injury, is anticipated to resume his captaincy duties this week.
Dravid backs Parag to come good after promotion to 3
Dravid supports Parag's promotion to the number three batting position. He discussed the importance of utilizing Riyan Parag in this pivotal role across all formats of cricket. Parag had an impressive season in IPL 2024, amassing 573 runs while batting at number four, which placed him third in the race for the orange cap. This season, he is anticipated to take on the regular number three spot.
"Promotion is indeed the right term to describe his situation. Riyan is undoubtedly one of our top batters," Dravid stated. "Our goal is to maximize his opportunities at the crease. In a twenty-over match, time is limited, and the more Riyan Parag is at the wicket, the more advantageous it is for our team."
However, Dravid also indicated that there is room for adaptability, with Nitish Rana being a viable alternative for that position. This strategy offers Rajasthan Royals a robust option for match-ups or maintaining left-right batting partnerships following the opening pair of Samson and Jaiswal.
"Naturally, we will continue to evaluate our options and monitor the situation as it unfolds. We recognize that Riyan has excelled at number four, which provides us with additional flexibility," the Rajasthan coach concluded.
