Rahane Calls Out Agarkar for Poor Communication After Unusual India Exclusion: 'If He Is Not Prepared, Competing Is Futile'

Veteran Indian batsman Ajinkya Rahane publicly addressed BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar on Sunday, expressing his disappointment over being overlooked for the 2023/25 World Test Championship cycle, despite his commendable performance against Australia in the WTC final held in June 2023. The 36-year-old, who last represented India two years ago after the Agarkar-led selection committee opted to prioritize younger players, conveyed his continued desire to don the Indian jersey.
After a year away from the national team, Rahane made a comeback following an impressive IPL season with the Chennai Super Kings, where he emerged as the team's top performer, scoring 89 and 46 runs. His contributions solidified his place in the Indian squad for the subsequent tour of the West Indies, where he was appointed vice-captain. However, he once again found himself sidelined as the new selection committee, under Agarkar's leadership, chose to focus on the next generation of cricketers.
In an interview with the Indian Express, Rahane expressed his sadness regarding the unexpected selection snub, as he had anticipated being part of the squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa later in 2023.
"When I was dropped a few years ago, I performed well and was selected for the World Test Championship final, only to be dropped again. What can I control? My performance. I excelled in domestic cricket and the IPL, which led to my recall. Typically, when an experienced player returns, it is expected that they will be given 2-3 series. I recognized that South Africa would be a tough series and was hopeful for a call-up, but I was not selected. It was disheartening, especially considering my long-standing contributions," he stated.
'Agarkar was no ready to talk...'
In discussing whether he had spoken with Agarkar or any other member of the selection committee, Rahane indicated that he was open to a direct conversation; however, none of the selectors were available for such a discussion.
"I am not the type to inquire about the reasons for my exclusion from the team. There has been a lack of communication. Many suggested that I should initiate a conversation, but dialogue can only occur if the other party is willing to engage. If they are not prepared, there is little value in pursuing the matter. I desired a one-on-one discussion. I did not send any messages. I felt a sense of disappointment when I was omitted following the WTC final, as I had invested significant effort. I anticipated being part of the subsequent series. Complaining serves no purpose. I can only focus on what is within my control. I maintain the belief that I will return to the team," he stated.
Despite the challenges he has faced, Rahane expressed his continued desire to represent India. Additionally, with Mumbai advancing to the Ranji Trophy semifinals this season, he has a limited number of matches to leave a lasting impression on the selection committee.
"My passion and determination remain strong. Currently, I am competing in the Ranji Trophy, striving to contribute fully to the Mumbai team. My objective is clear: to achieve another comeback," he remarked.
