India, Jan. 29 -- Following the conclusion of the 2025 Australian Open, Rafael Nadal ascended two positions in the ATP rankings, as revealed in the updated list released on Monday, despite his retirement from professional tennis.

Nadal's last appearance on the court occurred in November during Spain's Davis Cup match against the Netherlands. He participated in the initial singles match, where he was defeated in straight sets by Botic van de Zandschulp. This match marked the end of his distinguished career, as Nadal opted to retire after enduring a prolonged battle with injuries.

Although he has not competed in any matches since then, Nadal's ranking improved to 171st, placing him just behind British player Dan Evans.

Nadal expressed that he did not wish to retire but acknowledged that his deteriorating physical condition compelled him to put down his racquet.

"It is illogical for me to continue playing when I know my body cannot support the competitive aspirations that drive me," he stated prior to his final match in November.

"I am not fatigued by tennis. If it were possible, I would continue to play, but I cannot train with the necessary consistency to compete at a level that justifies the daily efforts."

In other developments, Jannik Sinner, who secured the Australian Open 2025 title for the second consecutive year, maintained his position at No. 1. He became the first Italian player to achieve three Grand Slam titles after defeating Alexander Zverev in the final in straight sets. Carlos Alcaraz, who exited in the quarterfinals, remained at No. 3, as did Taylor Fritz at No. 4, while Daniil Medvedev fell two spots to No. 7 following an unexpected second-round exit in Melbourne.

Novak Djokovic, who withdrew due to a hamstring injury during the Australian Open semifinals, moved up one position to No. 6, just behind Casper Ruud.
