Raducanu on Wimbledon Withdrawal: "No Bad Blood" with Andy Murray

2 months ago | 5 Views

India, Jan. 16 -- Once a fierce competitor on the court, Andy Murray has now taken a step back but remains influential. The Scottish tennis star has joined Novak Djokovic's coaching team for the current season and has been a constant presence at the Australian Open 2025 in Melbourne. Murray announced his retirement following the Paris Olympics 2024, after a career that was heavily impacted by injuries in his later years.

Before the Paris Games, Murray played his last match at Wimbledon 2024, teaming up with his brother Jamie in men's doubles. He was also set to compete in mixed doubles alongside Emma Raducanu, but she had to pull out due to an injury.

After her second-round victory in Melbourne, Raducanu shared her thoughts on the situation, admitting she was worried about how Murray would react. To her relief, there’s no animosity between them. She mentioned, "Afterwards, I sent him a long message, basically saying: 'If I caused any trouble at Wimbledon, that’s the last thing I wanted.'"

"He's someone I've always looked up to, and I really don’t want any bad vibes or hard feelings with him."

She mentioned, "I sent him a pretty lengthy message, and he took it really well. He replied that he was disappointed but totally understood. We're good now. We pass each other and say 'hello' and 'well done.' It's really cool to see him hanging out with Novak [Djokovic] too. Two amazing champions just chilling together, it's pretty awesome."

A few hours before their mixed doubles match last year, Raducanu had to withdraw to concentrate on her struggling singles performance after feeling some stiffness in her right wrist. She ended up losing in the fourth round to Lulu Sun.

On the other hand, Murray's mom, Judy, was caught off guard by Raducanu's choice. Later, she admitted she was being sarcastic and criticized the tournament's schedule for Raducanu's exit.

"I really respect him, and I just wanted to avoid any bad vibes since I’d be seeing him around. It didn’t feel right, so I shot him a text, and he replied with a really nice message. I’m glad I reached out, and I just hope he doesn’t hold any grudges against me," Raducanu added.
