Rackets to Reports: How Camila Giorgi is Changing the Tennis Conversation

1 month ago | 5 Views

Former tennis player Camila Giorgi, recognized for both her athletic achievements and off-court controversies, has made a striking return to the sport—not wielding a racket, but rather a microphone.

The 33-year-old Italian, who announced her retirement from professional tennis last year, has now taken on the role of a reporter at the ATP 250 event in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Once achieving a career-high ranking of world No. 26, Giorgi's retirement was confirmed when her name was listed among retired players by the International Tennis Integrity Agency in May 2023.

Her shift from the tennis arena to the media landscape comes after a tumultuous year marked by various allegations, including accusations of owing several months of unpaid rent for a luxury villa in Calenzano, near Florence. Additionally, there were rumours regarding her purported evasion of tax authorities—claims she has categorically denied.

From lingerie model to tennis reporter

Following her departure from professional tennis, Giorgi moved to the United States to embark on a career as a lingerie model. Nevertheless, her enduring love for the sport has led her to return in a different capacity. At the Buenos Aires tournament, she has been engaging in interviews with prominent players, including Argentina’s sixth seed, Sebastián Báez, and has proudly showcased aspects of her new profession on Instagram.

In a video featuring her interview with Báez, along with a photo of her official accreditation, Giorgi seems to be embracing this unexpected career transition with assurance.

Giorgi’s life outside the court has been anything but uneventful. In October 2023, her former landlord accused her of vacating her Italian villa without settling her rent obligations. To complicate matters, they claimed she took half of the furnishings, including rugs, antique tables, and other items.

According to The Sun, Giorgi was swift to refute these allegations. In an interview with Italy’s Verissimo on Canale 5, she dismissed the claims, asserting:

"Did I suddenly disappear? That’s merely their narrative. I didn’t vanish. I had to announce my retirement in Paris, and when my name appeared on the anti-doping website, the news circulated."

She further emphasized that she had been dividing her time between Italy and the U.S., stating, "We resided in Miami for three years. I would love to remain there indefinitely, but I also return to Italy often. I simply prefer not to discuss my personal life, which may give the impression that I am concealing something."

Her attorney, Edmondo Tomaselli, has firmly denied that Giorgi “fled” from any obligations. Addressing the allegations regarding the furniture, she asserted that all items in the villa were rightfully hers.

"We did not escape for tax reasons. I never ran away; I just chose not to speak. Did we fail to pay rent and take the furniture? The house was vacant when we moved in—we brought our own furnishings."
