Rajat Patidar is characterized by his quiet demeanour, stubbornness, and steely resolve, according to Royal Challengers Bengaluru head coach Andy Flower. In his attempt to describe Patidar's attributes without causing embarrassment, Flower inadvertently highlighted the qualities that led the RCB management to appoint him as the new captain for IPL 2025. This decision reflects the franchise's willingness to invest in a leader with limited international experience but significant potential.

Before the announcement on Thursday, there was speculation regarding the possible return of Virat Kohli as captain. Kohli, who led RCB from 2013 to 2021, boasts an impressive record, although he was unable to secure a championship title. However, RCB chose to focus on the future by appointing Patidar as the successor to Faf du Plessis, believing he has the capability to lead the team beyond the upcoming season.

Flower elaborated on three key attributes that he believes will contribute to Patidar's effectiveness as a leader. "Firstly, Rajat possesses a calmness and simplicity that will serve him well as a captain, especially in the high-pressure environment of the IPL, which is one of the premier competitions globally. His inherent calm and straightforward nature will be advantageous amidst the tournament's intensity," he stated.

The former Zimbabwe captain further discussed Patidar's decision-making skills, which were instrumental in guiding his domestic team to the finals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament. While all leaders face challenges in decision-making, Flower expressed confidence that Patidar's qualities will prepare him well. "We observed Rajat closely during his captaincy of Madhya Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament, and we were impressed by his capabilities. Additionally, he may be a quiet individual, but he demonstrates a genuine concern for his teammates and those he shares a dressing room with. This quality is invaluable."

Rajat Patidar steely didn't listen to me when I tried to coach him': Andy Flower

The 31-year-old, who joined the franchise in 2022, distinguished himself as one of their leading players in the previous season. The right-handed batsman ranked as the second-highest run-scorer in the premier domestic T20 tournament, trailing only Ajinkya Rahane, amassing 428 runs from 10 matches with an impressive average of 61 and a strike rate of 186.08.

The 36-year-old captained RCB in 143 matches, marking the second-longest tenure in that role, following the iconic Mahendra Singh Dhoni of Chennai Super Kings.

Flower also mentioned that he once attempted to coach Patidar, but the batsman was somewhat resistant, as he had confidence in his own abilities.

"What stands out to me about him is his tenacity, strength, and resilience. I have witnessed this firsthand while trying to coach him in the nets; he tends to disregard my advice. However, this quality is evident in his playing style. His courage in facing challenges is commendable, and I believe this trait will be crucial for him as he navigates the inevitable highs and lows of participating in the IPL, especially as he steps into a leadership role within a major franchise this year. These attributes will undoubtedly benefit Rajat. We acknowledge and celebrate them, and I eagerly anticipate seeing him perform."
