RCB Captaincy Snub? Why Virat Kohli Was Considered but Not Selected for IPL 2025
1 month ago | 5 Views
The uncertainty has been resolved. Rajat Patidar has been appointed as the captain of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru for IPL 2025 and the subsequent seasons, replacing Virat Kohli. Although there were widespread speculations regarding Kohli's potential return to the captaincy, the franchise has chosen to embrace a new leader to represent them. Following RCB's announcement of their three official retentions in November, the debate centred around Kohli and Patidar. Kohli has dedicated a decade to leading RCB with passion and commitment; however, since his resignation from the role, a return seemed improbable. The official announcement made on Thursday confirmed that Kohli's captaincy is now a chapter of the past, with Patidar set to guide RCB into the future.
Kohli extended his best wishes to Patidar for this new phase in his career. Adding to the intrigue surrounding the captaincy decision, Mo Bapat acknowledged that Virat Kohli was indeed considered as a candidate. Before the third ODI between India and England in Ahmedabad, Kohli, Bapat, and head coach Andy Flower convened to finalize the decision.
"The choice between an Indian or overseas captain was a significant topic for us. We strongly believe that an Indian captain would be more suitable. This is not a reflection on any overseas candidates; we have discussed them positively. However, we were particularly focused on an Indian option, especially given that this is an Indian competition played on Indian pitches against mostly Indian players. Having someone with local knowledge and insight is extremely beneficial for us. We had numerous options," stated Bobat, RCB's director of operations.
"Certainly, Virat was a viable option. That is obvious, and I understand that fans might have preferred him initially. However, we have also seen considerable potential in Rajat. My perspective on Virat is that he does not require the title of captain to lead. Leadership is one of his innate strengths, and it comes naturally to him," he added.
'Virat Kohli always a leader'
Bobat emphasized that Kohli's role remains unchanged, regardless of his captaincy status. Kohli continues to be a pivotal leader within the team, and as he mentioned in the video, he is committed to supporting Patidar in every possible manner. Throughout the last three IPL seasons, Kohli consistently provided guidance to Du Plessis, stepping in during moments when Du Plessis was off the field or when the Impact Player rule was applied in RCB's matches. However, the focus is on the future, and Patidar is well-suited for that position.
"I can recall two or three specific instances where he has created run-out opportunities and taken wickets from seemingly nothing. He establishes the standard. Every player on the field understands the necessity to elevate their performance due to his influence. His energy often sets the tone. It is well-known how much he thrives in competitive situations and desires to be the one leading us to victory. Additionally, there are aspects of his professionalism that often go unnoticed, such as his practice habits, training routines, gym workouts, lifestyle choices, and nutrition. He serves as a role model. It is clear to everyone in the country and around the world that Virat embodies leadership in every aspect. Both Andy and I rely on him significantly," Bobat remarked.
"Faf has also depended on him extensively, and we are confident that Rajat will do the same. Earlier this week, Andy and I had the opportunity to spend time with Virat in Ahmedabad, which was a pleasure as we discussed various matters. It was evident that he was filled with energy and enthusiasm regarding this decision and appointment. This was apparent in the brief video as well. He is genuinely happy for Rajat, recognizing how deserving he is of this opportunity, and he fully supports him. We observed a palpable sense of energy and excitement from him. While he was certainly a viable option, we felt that, for all the reasons we have outlined regarding Rajat, this was the right moment for us. It is fantastic to know that Virat is fully on board and backing him."
