November 2024 will hold a significant place in the life of young Suryansh Shedge. Just a day after making his T20 debut for Mumbai, he was acquired by Punjab Kings during the Indian Premier League mega auctions. Approximately 20 days later, Shedge demonstrated the wisdom of PBKS's investment by delivering an impressive unbeaten innings of 36 runs off just 15 balls in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final against Madhya Pradesh, leading Mumbai to victory. The right-handed batsman expressed confidence that playing under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer will facilitate his adaptation to the IPL environment.
"Examining Punjab Kings' track record in recent years reveals their commitment to nurturing new talent. They closely monitor the domestic circuit. I am genuinely thrilled to join this franchise. Having Shreyas bhaiya as captain is advantageous, as he is a familiar presence," he remarked.
Suryansh will also collaborate with his Mumbai teammate Musheer and reminisced about the moment both players were selected by Punjab. On the second day of the IPL Auctions, while returning to the team hotel after a training session, he began streaming the auctions on his phone.
"I noticed Musheer Khan's name and anticipated my turn would be next. When Punjab Kings acquired him, I felt a surge of excitement. Just as I was about to call him, my name appeared, prompting me to pause. Punjab Kings raised the paddle, and we celebrated together on the bus. The first call I received was from Musheer, as we will be teammates," the 21-year-old shared.
Following a conversation with his parents, Suryansh received congratulations from his Mumbai teammates, including Iyer, at the dining table, where he was affectionately nicknamed 'Punjab da Munda' by his peers. Now, the emerging star is eager to make a significant impact with Punjab and entertain the fans. "I am ready to fulfill whatever the team requires. I will maintain an open mindset and aim to entertain the audience," he stated.
Suryansh reflected on his back injury from the previous year, which significantly impacted his career in Mumbai. At that time, he was vying for a position on Mumbai's senior team, but his physiotherapists recommended that he take a break. The cricketer confessed that he feared his career might be nearing its end.
"It was discovered that my stress fracture had recurred. I was taken aback. The initial two months were a haze, and I was merely going through the motions. I had hoped to make a significant impact that year," he stated.
"I lacked confidence regarding a return. In a city like Mumbai, the competition is relentless. Talent can be found on every corner. I worried that I would be forgotten and that my career would decline," he continued.
With encouragement from his friends and family, Suryansh cultivated self-confidence and began participating in various strength training sessions. As he regained his physical strength, he also worked on enhancing his game by incorporating more aggressive batting techniques.
"Making a comeback to the Mumbai senior team is no easy feat. I returned and achieved three centuries in three matches, which led to my selection for the U-23 team. I scored 168 runs and contributed to the team's victory, which bolstered my chances of being chosen for the senior Mumbai team and allowed me to represent Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy," he explained.
Now, after showcasing his talents for Mumbai in the domestic league over the past year, Suryansh aims to assist Punjab Kings in securing the championship. He is optimistic about learning from Coach Ricky Ponting.
"Ricky Ponting is a legend. His contributions to cricket are immeasurable. Since retiring, he has remained actively involved in the sport and the community. His extensive experience in the IPL equips him with a deep understanding of the game. Australians are renowned for their fearless approach, and he embodies that spirit. We are hopeful that, under his leadership, we will lift the trophy this year," he concluded.
