Puja Mahato entered the ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup bearing significant responsibilities as both the captain of Nepal and a full international player.

With her idol being Jasprit Bumrah and her aspiration to be recognized as Lady Bumrah, embracing this responsibility is an integral part of her journey.

The 18-year-old has excelled in Malaysia, culminating in an outstanding Player-of-the-Match performance against the host nation during the 4th Place Play-off.

Competing in Johor, Mahato made her intentions clear from the outset by choosing to bowl first, claiming a wicket with her second delivery. She secured another wicket before the conclusion of her initial spell and returned to finish the Malaysian innings, concluding with impressive figures of four wickets for just nine runs.

This achievement brings her tournament total to nine wickets, surpassing all other players in 2025 by two, while also ranking seventh in runs scored.

Rather than succumbing to the pressure, Mahato seems to have flourished in it.

She remarked, “As a captain, I believe it is essential to lead by example. I am driven to play for my country and make a meaningful contribution. While bowling, my goal was to take wickets quickly, and while batting, I aimed to support my team effectively.

“My bowling inspiration is Bumrah; I aspire to be Lady Bumrah, which motivates my performance.

“As captain, I have always felt the need to remain present and contribute to my country’s success.”

Nepal encountered difficulties while pursuing a target of 46, finding themselves at 22 for three, with boundaries proving hard to come by.

However, Mahato remained composed, capitalizing on quick singles when available and striking an occasional boundary to alleviate the pressure.

Her unbeaten score of 23 contributed to a seven-wicket victory, marking a commendable conclusion for the team.

Mahato played a pivotal role in Nepal's qualification for the tournament, having achieved an impressive 130 not out and claiming five wickets for eight runs in a qualifying match against Kuwait.

She will now shift her attention back to senior cricket, while several of her younger teammates will continue with this squad for the upcoming 2027 ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup, which will take place in Nepal.

Mahato expressed, “This was our final match, and we emerged victorious. This moment is particularly special for us, as we performed admirably in several matches, yet the outcomes were not favourable. I wish to savour this achievement.

“This tournament provided valuable experience for the players. In 2027, when we host the event, they will strive to excel.

“Our most cherished memory is this victory.”
