Priyansh Arya, aged 24, made a significant impact in the cricketing world with a remarkable innings of 103 runs off just 42 balls against the Chennai Super Kings during IPL 2025 in Mullanpur on Tuesday. The left-handed batsman delivered one of the most daring performances in the tournament's history, continuing to score aggressively even as he lost partners. During the Punjab Kings' innings, assistant coach Brad Haddin revealed that it took only a few balls in a practice match for the management to decide on including Priyansh Arya in the playing XI.
"He faced about eight balls in a practice game before the IPL, and that was sufficient for us to conclude that he should be in the first match," Haddin stated while addressing the host broadcaster.
In his outstanding performance against CSK, Priyansh Arya hit 7 fours and 9 sixes, achieving a strike rate of 245.24. He set the record for the fastest century by an uncapped player in IPL history and also recorded the fifth-fastest century overall in the tournament. Additionally, this innings marked the quickest century ever scored against CSK in the IPL. His dominance on the field caught the attention of India's T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, who shared a post on Instagram Stories praising the performance, stating, "What a knock. Total entertainment."
Priyansh Arya is under the guidance of coach Sanjay Bharadwaj, who has previously trained notable players such as Gautam Gambhir, Nitish Rana, and Amit Mishra. Hailing from Ashok Vihar in Delhi, Priyansh's father is a government school teacher. He gained national recognition last year when he hit six sixes in an over during the Delhi Premier League. While playing for South Delhi Superstarz against North Delhi Strikers, he scored 120 runs, which included 10 fours and 10 sixes.
Priyansh Arya is a natural-born striker of the ball
At one point, the Punjab Kings found themselves struggling at 83/5 in the eighth over. However, Priyansh Arya persisted with his aggressive play, leading the team to a total of 219/6 by the end of their 20 overs. In the post-match presentation, Priyansh shared that he initially aimed to temper his natural instincts, but Nehal Wadhera relayed a message from the coaching staff encouraging him to trust his instincts and play his natural game.
"He has always been this way, eager to take risks and play instinctively. When you overthink your game, it can lead to complications. His performance helped the team surpass the 200-run mark, securing victory for Punjab Kings," Priyansh remarked.
"Priyansh mentioned that both Shreyas Iyer and Ricky Ponting are fully supportive of him. They have encouraged him to trust his instincts and assured him that he requires no additional coaching," he added.
The left-handed batsman from Delhi joined Bharadwaj's academy at the age of ten. Prior to the start of IPL 2025, he traveled to Bhopal to train at his coach's residential academy, focusing on range-hitting as well as cut and pull shots.
"He was concentrating on his cut and pull shots. Since he was being considered for the opener position, it was essential for him to refine these techniques. He needed to prepare for bowlers delivering at speeds of 140-150 km/h, so this training was crucial. Big-hitting is something that comes naturally to him," the coach explained.
