Prithvi Shaw is really going through a tough time right now. The 25-year-old opener has been dropped from Mumbai's squad and won't be playing in at least the first three matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which kicks off on December 21. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) announced the 17-member team for those matches on Tuesday, and Shaw's name was missing.

He was part of the Mumbai team that won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy recently, but his performance was pretty disappointing. He only managed to score 197 runs in 9 games, which just wasn't enough.

In the final against Madhya Pradesh in Bengaluru, he could only muster 10 runs. To add to his woes, Shaw went unsold during the IPL mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Lately, Shaw has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Back in October 2024, he was also left out of Mumbai's squad for the first phase of the Ranji Trophy, which many saw as a warning sign for the right-handed batter, given his past issues with fitness and discipline.

In 2024, Prithvi Shaw has only scored 59 runs across four innings in the Ranji Trophy. After Mumbai clinched the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, captain Shreyas Iyer acknowledged Shaw's incredible talent but emphasized the importance of self-reflection.

"I genuinely believe he’s a naturally gifted player. The level of talent he has is unmatched. That’s a fact. He just needs to step up his work ethic," Shreyas mentioned.

"I’ve said this in various interviews before. He really needs to get his work ethic sorted. If he does, the possibilities for him are endless. But can I make him do that? No, I can’t. He’s played a lot of cricket, and everyone has shared their advice. Ultimately, it’s up to him to go out there and figure things out," he added.

Shreyas will captain Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy while Ajinkya Rahane steps back for personal reasons.

Shreyas Iyer is set to captain Mumbai for the first three matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Ajinkya Rahane won’t be in the squad since he’s taking a break for personal reasons.

Joining the team are Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, and Shardul Thakur, all ready to make an impact in the upcoming 50-over tournament.

Mumbai finds itself in Group C of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, competing against teams like Nagaland, Hyderabad, Saurashtra, Punjab, Puducherry, Arunachal Pradesh, and Karnataka.

They’ll kick off their campaign against Karnataka on December 21 at the Narendra Modi Stadium B Ground in Ahmedabad.

Here’s the Mumbai squad for the first three matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy: Shreyas Iyer (c), Ayush Mhatre, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Jay Bista, Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, Suryansh Shedge, Siddhesh Lad, Hardik Tamore, Prasad Pawar, Atharva Ankolekar, Tanush Kotian, Shardul Thakur, Royston Dias, Juned Khan, Harsh Tanna, and Vinayak Bhoir.
