The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) initiated its 50th-anniversary celebrations earlier this week at the Wankhede Stadium, featuring a distinguished ceremony to honour former captains of the Mumbai cricket team. Preparations are now in full swing for the significant event scheduled for January 19, which will bring together numerous former and current cricketing luminaries from Mumbai.

Prithvi Shaw, the young opener who played a pivotal role in leading India to victory in the U19 World Cup in 2018, reflected on his experiences at the Wankhede Stadium in anticipation of the celebrations. He recalled his inaugural visit to the venue during the 2011 World Cup final, where the Indian team, captained by MS Dhoni, triumphed over Sri Lanka by six wickets to claim the prestigious title.

Shaw attended that memorable match with his friend Arjun Tendulkar, the son of the iconic Sachin Tendulkar, who was part of the playing XI in the final. Arjun currently competes in domestic cricket for Goa and represents the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League.

“My most vivid memory, one that will stay with me forever, is when I came here to witness the 2011 World Cup. I was just 11 years old; my friend Arjun Tendulkar and I sat here and watched that match live. I can still vividly recall the moment we lifted the World Cup. What an unforgettable experience that was; it was my first time here,” Shaw remarked.

“As children, we always dreamed of playing at Wankhede Stadium. Now, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Mumbai Cricket Association, I encourage everyone to join in the festivities. This celebration is for all the people of Mumbai. Please come on the 19th and partake in this grand occasion,” he added.

Shaw's struggles

The young opener has experienced a challenging 2024, failing to establish himself in domestic cricket. Shaw's ongoing disciplinary problems have adversely affected his position in the Mumbai XI, leading to his removal from the Ranji Trophy squad during the current season.

Additionally, Shaw faced difficulties in delivering satisfactory performances for the Delhi Capitals, resulting in his eventual release from the team. To make matters worse, he was unable to attract any bidders during the IPL Auction held in November.
