Mumbai's Prithvi Shaw experienced a disappointing outing in the crucial final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, scoring only 10 runs off 6 balls in the chase of 177 runs. Despite a brief resurgence with a rapid 49 in the semi-final, Shaw's overall performance in the tournament has been lacklustre, failing to achieve any scores above 50. This poor showing adds to a series of challenging performances for the young cricketer.

Throughout this year, Shaw has faced a series of setbacks; he was dropped from the Delhi Capitals mid-season due to his underwhelming scores and was subsequently released by the franchise. To his surprise, he went unsold in the IPL auction, with no teams showing interest in the young opener. Furthermore, he was also excluded from Mumbai's Ranji Trophy squad.

Given his reputation for explosive batting, fans had high hopes for Shaw's performance in the domestic T20 tournament. However, his display in the final led to widespread disappointment among supporters.

The fans' reactions were as follows:

Shaw's premature exit did not hinder Mumbai's pursuit of the target; they completed the chase with more than two overs remaining, propelled by outstanding performances from Ajinkya Rahane (37) and Suryakumar Yadav (48), along with an impressive late innings from Suryansh Shedge, who finished not out on 36 from just 15 balls.

In the meantime, Shaw concluded the 2024 tournament with a total of 197 runs across nine matches. He is expected to return to the field for the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the domestic fifty-over competition, where he aims to make a significant comeback with the bat. The 24-year-old was included in the list of potential players for Mumbai, which was released last month.

Earlier this week, Shaw's childhood coach, Jwala Singh, expressed his disappointment regarding the player's recent struggles and emphasized the need for him to concentrate on his game.

“It is disheartening. Prithvi was my first student to participate in the U19 World Cup. He began his career impressively, playing Test cricket and scoring a century on his debut, even being named man of the series. He was heralded as the next Sachin, with many experts drawing comparisons. Now, he finds himself dropped from the Ranji team and going unsold in the IPL. It pains me to witness his difficulties. I have offered him considerable advice as a coach, but seeing him in this situation is quite surprising,” Singh remarked.
