Prithvi Shaw Advised to Rethink Work Ethics and Discipline for a Comeback
2 days ago | 5 Views
Punjab Kings batsman Shashank Singh is of the opinion that Prithvi Shaw has the potential to reclaim his former brilliance, provided he implements the necessary adjustments. Shaw, a right-handed batsman, gained significant recognition after leading India to victory in the U19 World Cup in 2018. He was heralded as a future star and made his Test debut, where he impressively scored a century. However, his current situation is markedly different, as he has been experiencing a decline in performance.
Recently, Shaw was excluded from Mumbai's Ranji Trophy squad and went unsold during the IPL 2025 mega auction. Reports have surfaced regarding issues of indiscipline and a lack of commitment on his part.
During an appearance on Shubhankar Mishra's YouTube show, Shashank Singh discussed the steps Shaw could take to revitalize his career. When asked about potential future stars in Indian cricket, he mentioned Shaw among others.
In response, Shashank remarked, "Yashasvi is definitely a prominent name. Shubman Gill is another exceptional talent. Prithvi Shaw, too, has the capability to excel if he returns to his fundamentals. I have known him for 13 years, having played alongside him in Mumbai."
Shashank further emphasized that Shaw possesses a unique outlook on various matters, which requires urgent attention. He encouraged the right-handed batsman to enhance his work ethic and discipline to facilitate a turnaround.
"I have known him since our days playing club cricket in Bombay. If you ask me what his challenges are, he has different views on certain issues. If he can adjust his perspectives on aspects such as work ethic, fitness, and discipline," Shashank stated.
"Perhaps he is already working on these areas, but if he can refine some of these elements, he has the potential to become even greater," he concluded.
Greg Chappell's advice to Shaw
The out-of-favour Mumbai cricketer Shaw previously received encouragement from Greg Chappell, the former Australian captain, who penned a letter urging him to engage in self-reflection and to focus on the process rather than the outcomes.
Chappell's correspondence followed Shaw's exclusion from Mumbai's Ranji Trophy team due to concerns regarding his "poor fitness and general conduct."
"Keep in mind that setbacks are an integral part of every accomplished athlete's journey. Even icons like Don Bradman experienced the disappointment of being dropped and had to work diligently to reclaim their positions. Their greatness stemmed not from evading challenges, but from their responses to them," Chappell conveyed in his letter.
"I recognize that you are currently navigating a difficult period, being sidelined from the Mumbai team. It is completely normal to feel frustrated and somewhat uncertain, but I want to emphasize that such moments often serve as pivotal turning points for athletes, contributing significantly to their careers and personal development," Chappell continued.
For those unfamiliar, Chappell and Shaw's relationship began during the U19 World Cup, where Chappell served as Cricket Australia's talent manager.
Shaw has represented India in 5 Test matches, 6 One Day Internationals, and 1 T20 International, accumulating a total of 561 runs across all formats.
