Chennai Super Kings faced ongoing challenges in their fielding on Tuesday, marking their fourth consecutive defeat in the IPL 2025 season. The team has now dropped a total of 11 catches this season, including a crucial one involving Shashank Singh during their match against Punjab Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Chandigarh. This incident elicited an enthusiastic response from Punjab co-owner Preity Zinta.

The incident occurred in the 17th over of the first innings when Shashank attempted a slog sweep against a well-delivered googly from Noor Ahmad. He managed to get a top edge, sending the ball high but not far. Rachin Ravindra positioned himself at cow corner to take the catch but ultimately failed to secure it. To make matters worse, his errant throw allowed Punjab to gain an additional run.

Preity's reaction was one of sheer joy as she leaped and ran excitedly in the stands, a moment that quickly went viral on social media, while MS Dhoni looked on in dismay. The dropped catch proved detrimental for Chennai, as Shashank, who was at 37 runs off 27 balls at the time, went on to score a half-century in just 36 balls, contributing to Punjab's impressive total of 219 for six.

Chennai's field woes

Chennai In the current IPL season, the team has dropped 11 catches, the highest number among all franchises. Their catch success rate stands at 68.5%, which is the lowest across the ten teams.

CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad expressed his disappointment with the team's fielding performance, identifying it as a key factor contributing to their four consecutive losses.

"I believe that in the last four matches, the primary difference has been our fielding. It has been crucial. The batsmen we are dropping catches against are consistently scoring 15, 20, or 30 runs," he stated during the post-match presentation. "I mentioned before the game that we need to take pleasure in our fielding. If you feel anxious, you are more likely to drop a catch. Striving to be an exceptional fielder, making those two or three crucial saves, and achieving run-outs can significantly benefit the team. While batting and bowling can have off days, fielding should be a strength."
