Punjab Kings achieved a remarkable victory while defending a target of 112 runs against the reigning champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, in Chandigarh. Yuzvendra Chahal, who faced scrutiny prior to the match, demonstrated his enduring talent by taking four wickets and dismantling the KKR batting order, which was dismissed for just 95 runs in this thrilling, low-scoring encounter. This match will be remembered, especially in a league where scores of 200 have become commonplace, as Punjab successfully defended the lowest total in IPL history.

The defending champions faltered under pressure, experiencing a significant collapse due to the efforts of Punjab's Yuzvendra Chahal (4-28) and Marco Jansen (3-17), who collectively claimed seven wickets to secure the win for their team.

With this vital victory, Punjab moved into the top four, accumulating eight points from six matches, while the defending champions, Kolkata, found themselves in sixth place with three wins and four losses.

PBKS co-owner Preity Zinta was visibly thrilled by her team's stunning win, leaping from her seat to congratulate the players and coaching staff on the field. The franchise's supporters were delighted to witness their owner's enthusiastic display, which also led to the Bollywood actress trending on X. PBKS is among three teams, alongside Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, that have yet to secure an IPL title since the league's inception.

At one point, KKR appeared to be in command of the chase, with Angkrish Raghuvanshi contributing 37 runs and captain Ajinkya Rahane displaying significant intent as Kolkata reached 62-2. However, the match took a dramatic turn in the eighth over when Chahal made a decisive impact. The experienced spinner dismantled Kolkata's batting lineup by quickly taking the wickets of Rahane, Raghuvanshi, Rinku Singh, and Ramanpreet Singh.

Marco Jansen (3-17) and Arshdeep Singh (1-11) efficiently wrapped up the lower order, despite Andre Russell (17) providing a brief moment of excitement with two sixes and a four, leading to an astonishing turnaround for Punjab and a thrilling victory.

“It’s hard to express in words,” Iyer commented on PBKS' remarkable win

The PBKS captain emphasised his team's aggressive approach and field placements, stressing the importance of not becoming overly excited by such victories.

“It’s difficult to articulate. I was simply trusting my instincts. I noticed the ball turning slightly and advised Yuzi to manage his breathing. We needed to maintain an attacking mindset, and the right players were positioned effectively. It’s challenging to find the right words at this moment, and wins like this make it truly special,” Iyer stated during the post-match presentation.

Punjab's next challenge will be against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Friday.
