Ponting Lashes Out as Glenn Maxwell’s Blunder Leads to Punjab Kings’ Setback
3 days ago | 5 Views
Glenn Maxwell of Punjab Kings had a rough outing, getting out for a first-ball duck against Gujarat Titans in Match 5 of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. He attempted a reverse sweep on the very first delivery from Sai Kishore but completely missed it. The ball sailed through, and the umpire quickly raised his finger to signal the out.
Maxwell didn’t stick around and headed straight to the dugout. However, the big screen soon replayed the moment, showing the ball going over the stumps.
If Maxwell had opted for a review, he would have still been at the crease. His decision not to challenge the call clearly frustrated head coach Ricky Ponting, who was seen shaking his head in disappointment from the dugout. Replays also captured Maxwell signaling to captain Shreyas Iyer that he hadn’t touched the ball.
Shreyas and Maxwell chose not to review the decision. With his first-ball out against the Gujarat Titans, Glenn Maxwell now holds the record for the most ducks in IPL history, having been dismissed for a score of zero a staggering 19 times in this lucrative league.
Earlier, Sai Kishore had sent Azmatullah Omarzai packing, but Marcus Stoinis managed to prevent the Indian spinner from achieving a hat-trick.
Aakash Chopra and Sanjay Bangar, who were providing Hindi commentary at the time, expressed their disappointment with Maxwell's shot selection on his very first ball. Aakash Chopra even quipped, “The big show turns into no show.”
Gujarat Titans won the toss and decided to bowl first against PBKS
Gujarat Titans' captain Shubman Gill won the toss earlier and chose to bowl first against Punjab Kings.
The Punjab team got off to a great start, thanks to young talent Priyansh Arya, who smashed 47 runs off just 23 balls, hitting 7 fours and 2 sixes.
Things were looking good for Punjab, but Sai Kishore turned the tide by taking out Omarzai and Maxwell with back-to-back deliveries.
In the end, Sai Kishore finished with three wickets in his four overs, giving away only 30 runs. Along with Omarzai and Maxwell, he also claimed the wicket of Marcus Stoinis.
