Chandigarh: Since the inception of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008, only the Punjab Kings (PBKS) have experienced the leadership of 17 different captains. With Ricky Ponting taking on the role of coach and Shreyas Iyer appointed as captain, the franchise may finally achieve stability, having started IPL 18 with two consecutive victories.
Sunil Joshi, the spin bowling coach and former Indian spinner, noted a distinct atmosphere within the team that has contributed to their successful beginning. “I must say the mood is different this time around. The training camps in Dharamsala and here have been productive. Both international and domestic players are performing well,” he remarked.
“I can confidently state that the positive elements we missed last season are now emerging. The captain is youthful, energetic, and optimistic, which has undoubtedly enhanced team morale. Additionally, there is a strong sense of camaraderie this time,” he added.
The young talents at PBKS have also acknowledged the contributions of Iyer and Ponting in fostering a supportive environment. Following a commendable performance against the Lucknow Super Giants, Nehal Wadhera expressed, “All credit goes to Iyer for his captaincy and the way he boosts our confidence, encouraging me to ‘play my natural game and go with the flow.’ I truly enjoy playing in that manner,” Wadhera shared with the official broadcaster.
Regarding Ponting, Wadhera stated, “I feel the need to validate Ricky Ponting’s faith in me.” He mentioned that he had “never encountered any negative remarks” from Ponting.
“Every head coach brings unique dynamics, communication styles, and energy. With Ricky, the communication is positive and straightforward,” Joshi explained.
Ponting and Iyer, both champions of the IPL, have expressed their desire for PBKS to perform better at home. As they prepare for their first home match against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium (PCA) in Mullanpur near Chandigarh on Saturday, PBKS aims to secure their third consecutive win.
PBKS secured only one victory out of five matches played in Mullanpur last season. “That is now behind us. We won our first two games, and we aim to maintain this winning momentum,” stated Joshi.
Joshi emphasized that PBKS boasts eight bowling and nine batting options, making their performance independent of whether they are playing at home or away. Additionally, players such as Prabhsimran Singh, Wadhera, Arshdeep Singh, Harpreet Brar, and Harnoor Pannu hail from Punjab, giving them a strong understanding of the local conditions.
This match also signifies the return of all-rounder Sanju Samson as the captain of the Royals. “I was somewhat surprised to have missed three games. It was a unique experience to watch my teammates from the sidelines. I am thrilled to be fully fit and eagerly anticipate the upcoming action,” remarked Samson.
Due to an injury, Samson had been utilized as an impact batting substitute while Riyan Parag captained RR. He mentioned that opening the innings, keeping wickets, and leading the team would provide a fresh experience. “It adds a new dimension to my career,” he noted.
Concerns have been raised regarding Yashasvi Jaiswal’s performance, but Samson assured that Jaiswal has been dedicating considerable time in the nets. Jaiswal's recent scores have been 1, 29, and 4.
