Ponting Boils Over as Punjab Pulls Off IPL’s Greatest Low-Score Heist
5 days ago | 5 Views
Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, the Punjab Kings achieved an extraordinary feat by defending the lowest total ever recorded in Indian Premier League (IPL) history, securing a 16-run victory over the reigning champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. The Punjab Kings successfully defended a modest score of 111 runs, dismissing KKR for just 95 runs in 16 overs, much to the delight of a packed audience.
The moment Marco Jansen claimed the final wicket of Andre Russell, the crowd erupted in celebration, marking the beginning of the festivities. Punjab Kings' head coach, Ricky Ponting, was visibly elated, joining the support staff and non-playing team members in the jubilant celebration.
The reaction from the dugout underscored the significance of the achievement against KKR. Shreyas Iyer savored the victory, especially after being released by the franchise despite having led them to a title win the previous year.
Even co-owner Preity Zinta was overwhelmed with emotion as she witnessed her team’s remarkable triumph over KKR in New Chandigarh.
At one point, KKR was positioned at 62/2, but a dramatic collapse allowed Punjab Kings to secure a memorable victory, as the defending champions lost their last eight wickets for a mere 33 runs.
Following the match, Ricky Ponting remarked, “This is the best win I have ever had in the IPL.”
Ponting took on the role of head coach for Punjab Kings prior to the IPL 2025 season, having previously served as the head coach for Delhi Capitals.
Yuzvendra Chahal emerged as the standout player for Punjab Kings, claiming four wickets, including those of key players Ajinkya Rahane, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Venkatesh Iyer, Rinku Singh, and Ramandeep Singh.
How did the match unfold
In the earlier stages, Punjab Kings' captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and chose to bat first. The home team was dismissed for a mere 111 runs, with Harshit Rana, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Sunil Narine collectively claiming seven wickets.
As Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) began their pursuit of 112 runs, it was anticipated that they would achieve the target with ease. If KKR had completed the chase in 14 overs, they would have ascended to the top of the standings.
Ajinkya Rahane and Raghuvanshi appeared to be in control, contributing 55 runs for the third wicket partnership. However, the game shifted dramatically with the introduction of Chahal, who quickly took four wickets.
Ultimately, KKR's chances of victory hinged on Andre Russell. Unfortunately, he was dismissed by Marco Jansen, leading to a significant win for PBKS.
