England cricket icon Kevin Pietersen has been appointed as the team mentor for Delhi Capitals in anticipation of the IPL 2025 season. The former England captain returns to assist the franchise, previously known as Delhi Daredevils, which he led in 2014, marking his inaugural coaching role in the IPL.

In a statement directed at IPL enthusiasts, Pietersen expressed, “I have cherished memories of playing for the Delhi franchise in the IPL, and my enthusiasm for the team has persisted throughout my broadcasting career. I shared the field with Venu (Venugopal Rao) during the 2012 season, and it is wonderful to reconnect with him as we embark on this new journey with such a remarkable franchise.”

“I enjoy a strong rapport with the owners and the fans of Delhi Capitals, so when this opportunity arose, my response was an immediate YES. It is an exhilarating chance to assume this new position as a mentor for the Capitals, and I eagerly anticipate joining the team, collaborating closely with the players, and doing everything possible to help us secure that ultimate championship,” he added.

Last season, DC finished in sixth place, and as they prepare for IPL 2025, they have strengthened their roster with the additions of KL Rahul, Harry Brook, and Mitchell Starc. In contrast, they have released Rishabh Pant while retaining Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Tristan Stubbs, and Abishek Porel.

Pietersen will be part of the DC coaching team, which also includes head coach Hemang Badani, who was appointed in October of the previous year. The coaching staff features assistant coach Matthew Mott, bowling coach Munaf Patel, and director of cricket Venugopal Rao.

Parth Jindal, co-owner of DC, welcomed Pietersen in the press release, stating, “KP was undoubtedly one of the finest modern-day batsmen, and his presence in our team is a significant asset. We are eager to see him leverage his expertise to guide our players toward achieving our goals. I extend my best wishes to him in this new capacity.”
