Pep Guardiola Criticizes Man United Fans for Abusive Chants About Phil Foden’s Mother

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola criticized Manchester United fans for their lack of class after they directed crude chants at Phil Foden's mother during the derby on Sunday. He expressed that rival fans should feel ashamed, especially after targeting the England player as he exited the pitch following a dull goalless draw at Old Trafford.

Guardiola remarked, "The chants directed at him? That's just classless. It's not about United as a club; it's about the individuals. We're all under scrutiny now—managers, owners, and players alike."

He added, "Honestly, I can't wrap my head around why people would bring Phil's mum into it. It's a sign of poor integrity and class, and they should be embarrassed. But this kind of behavior isn't just a UK issue; it's happening everywhere."

The draw meant City missed the opportunity to climb back into the Premier League's top four, while United remained stuck in 13th place.

Guardiola noted, "Sure, winning would have been better, but Old Trafford is always a tough place to play—you need to perform well to come out on top.

"When we lost possession, we struggled, and they were able to counter. The first 10-15 minutes of the second half were our strongest, and I saw some positive signs, but we weren't in a position to capitalize further. It's okay, though. We'll take the point and keep moving forward."

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville, now a TV pundit, criticized both teams, remarking that the lackluster match felt more like a friendly than a competitive derby.

United manager Ruben Amorim didn't push back against the criticism but argued that it's unfair to compare this match to past derbies, hinting that this season has been the toughest for his club.

Amorim stated, "I get that Gary Neville tends to be critical, and I can accept that. However, we’re currently experiencing our worst season ever.

"Manchester City has had a history of success, but they’re facing challenges this season, which means we’re not in the best position to deliver an exciting game for the fans. When you’re not competing for top honors, it changes the dynamics. You have to consider the context of the match."

He acknowledged that it will take time for United to return to their desired level. The Portuguese manager added, "To truly dominate against any team will require significant time. We need to adapt our strategies based on our opponents.

"Right now, City might be the best team in the world, and they’ve been at this level for a while. We’re making progress, but emulating their style, which they’ve perfected over many years, is going to take a considerable amount of time."
