Pant’s Captaincy in Doubt After Controversial No. 7 Decision: ‘Show Leadership Through Action’
9 days ago | 5 Views
In what can only be termed a tactical mistake, Lucknow Super Giants opted to keep their captain, Rishabh Pant, on the bench until the last two deliveries of the innings during their significant eight-wicket loss to Delhi Capitals. With the team struggling to find momentum after choosing to bat first, the choice to elevate Abdul Samad, who scored only 2 runs off 8 balls, ahead of Pant proved to be a spectacular failure.
This decision drew sharp criticism from analysts Shane Watson, Suresh Raina, Anil Kumble, and Harbhajan Singh, all of whom were perplexed by Pant coming to the crease with merely two balls left in the innings. During the Hindi commentary of the match, Saba Karim also expressed surprise at the tactical choice.
"Strategy? It's incomprehensible to me. You are the captain. This responsibility is given to you because you can contribute value to the team. And this was your moment," Saba stated.
Saba questioned Pant's leadership, noting that he needed to set an example when Nicholas Pooran was dismissed in LSG's innings.
"Rishabh Pant was prepared. But who made the decision to withhold him? Was it Pant himself? Was it the team management? Was the coach involved? Footage indicates that Pant was frustrated at not being sent earlier.
"But, you’re the captain. Ultimately, the team plays under your leadership. You must lead by example. There’s no utility in coming to bat for two balls. You were needed when Nicholas Pooran got out and LSG was under pressure. The only silver lining was Ayush Badoni performing well near the end and playing his shots," Saba remarked.
Pant's reaction
Pant’s explanation following the match did not significantly boost confidence. The wicketkeeper-batter mentioned that the plan was to “capitalize” on the pitch with Samad, succeeded by David Miller, who also struggled to gain momentum.
"The plan was to capitalize. We sent Samad to take advantage of a wicket like that. After that, Miller came in, and we just really got stuck on the pitch. Ultimately, these are the aspects we must figure out and strive to identify our optimal combination moving forward," he stated after the match.
With Lucknow only scoring 159/6, clearly below the expected standard on a pitch that was anticipated to ease under lights, the captain’s late entrance has now sparked concerns regarding strategy and clarity in leadership.
